Giving Back

Everyone Helps, Everyone WinsDavid T. Levinson recently put out a great book showing you how to make the world a better place.  Organizing over fifty thousand volunteers, he's got what it takes to write on the subject.  Check out Everyone Helps, Everyone Wins.  Whether you write a check, help someone out, or volunteer locally (say, at the library - hint, hint), everyone wins.

Who Do You Believe?

Don't Cross Your EyesMy mother always told me that you can get food poisoning from eating fish and dairy in the same meal.  Is that true?  I'm still trying to figure that out, but many of my health myths have been proven wrong by reading Don't Cross Your Eyes... They'll Get Stuck That Way! by Dr. Aaron E. Carroll and Dr. Rachel C.

In Memory of a Friend

In Memory of Teresa Molne

For those of you who may not have heard, Harris County Public Library lost a dear friend.  Teresa Molne passed away in July of this year after working for the Katy Branch Library, the Maud Marks Branch Library, and the Katherine Tyra Branch Library.  In her memory a statue of a Great Dane (a breed she loved) has been placed in the courtyard at the Katy Library and will serve to reflect her love of dogs and of the library for many years to come.  Stop by and take a look next time you're in.

Picking Ronald Cotton

Picking CottonI've been gripped by a true story lately.  Picking Cotton by Jennifer Thompson-Cannino and Ronald Cotton is the story of Jennifer being raped and her belief that Ronald was the perpetrator.  He served 11 years in jail before DNA evidence proved his innocence and provided his release.  I'm torn.  Should I skip to the end to see him finally receive justice, or do I read every word because the book is so well-written?  I'm picking the latter.
