Spring Break Week at the Children's Department!

  •    The Children's Department is the perfect destination for a week of Spring Break fun! 
  • Grab and Go crafts will be availabel (while supplies last) at the Children's Reference Desk.  On Monday, March 13th pick up a rainbow sun craft and  on Wednesday, March 15th you can pick up a cookie monster bookmark.                    
  • Story Times:  Monday – Thursday (please access the calendar for specific days, ages and times)
  • Art Explorers: Tuesday, March 14th at 5:00 pm.  Learn about Pop Art and create a butterfly canvas. This program is for children ages 8 – 12 and requires registration by calling 832-559-4235.
  • Yeah for Spring Break!  See you then!

Chicken Big Today!

    On a teeny little farm, in an itty-bitty coop, a very small hen laid a big, giant egg.  And out of this egg came one big, humongous . . . something!  Find out what that "something" is as you enjoy a live performance of the Keith Graves book Chicken BIG presented by Book Bash!  It all happens TODAY, Wednesday, March 8th at 5:00 pm.  This show is FREE and appropriate for children of all ages  (and their families).  Please meet in the Children's Area.

Teen Game Night

    Hey Teens, come play with our collection of cool board games this Wednesday, February 22nd at 5:30 pm!  Learn a new game or show off your mastery of an old favorite.   This program is for tweens and teens ages 10 - 18 and will meet in L129 - 1st floor meeting room.

Roller Girl and Roller Derby at the Library!

 At the Monday, February 20th meeting of the Children's book club Chapter Chats at 5 pm, the Newbery honor book "Roller Girl" is being discussed.  As an extra added surprise, members of the Houston Roller Derby team, The Psych Ward Sirens, will be here in person!  Learn [first hand] about the sport of roller derby, take pictures and see a [library style] roller derby demonstration!  All are welcome to attend!  If you would like to read the book and participate in the discussion, please stop by the children's reference desk to check out your copy!  For more information, call 832-559-4235. *The John Newbery award is presented annually to authors of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for Children.

 

Cody Bear Checks In!

Recently our long time Children's Department bear - Cody Bear - retired to Florida and we received a new bear named Theodore!  Theodore has settled in nicely and has been enjoying getting to know all of the children here at the library.  The other day we received a postcard from Cody Bear and while he misses the library and all the children, he wants us to know that he is thoroughly enjoying his retirement.  Here is the postcard for you to read for yourself! *click on blog entry to enlarge postcard

Explore Magical Creatures in Art!


Learn about magical creatures in medieval art on Tuesday, February 14th at 5:00 pm at Art Explorers and create a one of  a kind mythical beast! This program is limited to 20 children ages 8 - 12.  Call 832-559-4235 for more information and to register.

Hey, Chocolate Lovers!

 Registration is now open for our very first Chocolate Olympics!  Children (ages 8 - 12) can participate and have fun in easy-to-win tabletop games, challenges and relays – all involving chocolate!
This yummy program will meet on Thursday, February 9th at 5:00 pm in the Children's Area and is limited to 20 children.  Please call 832-559-4235 to register.

Introducing Theodore!

 Thank you to all who participated in our "name the bear contest" over the past 2 weeks.  After counting well over 200 votes, the winner by a large margin is Theodore!  We think its the perfect name for our new friend!   Next time you are in the library, say hello to Theodore and give him a great big bear hug!
