After School CraftTime

On most Wednesday afternoons during the school year the library hosts a 30-45 minute program for school-age children. This Wednesday, February 9, is CraftTime, when the young people will be guided in making a craft. Some Wednesdays there will be a GameTime or ScienceTime. 

Come anytime for the Wednesday afternoon program! Most Wednesdays at 3:15 pm for school-age children.

Opera to Go! is Rescheduled!

Picture of Opera Lady SingingOK, the picture is a cliché but the exciting fact is that Opera to Go! of the Houston Grand Opera is coming to the La Porte library! The show presented will be: Storybook Opera. “The Dog Who Sang at the Opera” and is based on the true story of a wolfhound who upstages an opera diva.  The program lasts about 30 minutes, is targeted to school age children, and is free.  It has been rescheduled for Thursday, February 24, at 4:30 p.m. because of weather concerns.

I Spy a Former Spy

The most remarkable fact about this person is that the spy was a woman who posed as a man so that she could join the Union army during the Civil War. Her birth name was Sarah Emma Evelyn Edmonson (sometimes listed as Edmondson). She joined the 2nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry under the alias Frank Thompson. She became a spy and completed 12 secret missions behind enemy lines, using various disguises.

The Inside Scoop While Job Hunting

Ever wonder how to find information about a company from an insider's perspective? There is a database that provides such information: glassdoor.com: an inside look at jobs & companies. To join the database is completely free, and it gives information posted by employees or former employees about salaries, interview questions, etc. for various companies. To access from our website, click on Databases, then Business, then Glassdoor.com.

Black & White Photo of StockyardA coworker suggested the DVD Food, Inc. and I watched it over the holidays. I will be making some small changes. A vegetable garden planted. Becoming more knowledgeable about which companies are treating animals and employees humanely.

Christmas on Main Street December 2

Christmas on Main Street in La Porte will be held this Thursday, December 2, beginning with the parade at 5 pm and entertainment at 6 pm. This will be the 23rd year for this annual event, which is popular with adults and children of all ages.
 
There will be free pictures of the children with Santa and Mrs. Claus at Five Points Plaza, sponsored by Walgreens. Vendors will be selling arts and crafts as well as Christmas food items. Clutch the Rockets Bear will sign autographs from 6 – 8 pm, and tour the street with Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph.

Thankful for Toddlers
