Embracing the Spirit of a Champion

This year, the  Lifetime Network and the American Library Association's, Campaign for America's Libraries have created a partnership to promote Black History Month.  On February 1,  "The Gabby Douglas Story," a Lifetime® Original Movie will premier; as  a two time gold medalist the story of Gabriella Douglas is sure to inspire the champion in all.

Bedtime Zzzzzzzz's

Have you ever tried to take a snooze, but the sounds of someone else's snoring, snorting, or wheezing keeps you awake? Arghh! When you are dealing with it in real life it's not a fun situation! However, it can offer humorous scenario when writing a picture book. Have you ever been kept awake by snoring? If so, how would you describe this sound?

Tick-Tock Goes the Clock

Fingerplays and rhymes are a great way to encourage early literacy. Here is one that I have done in storytime, and  both toddlers and children enjoy.

Psst...Have You Seen These Yet?

About this time of year, I begin to see several booklists  for "best books" of the year. You can find these lists on blogs, websites and journals, and many are outstanding resources for anyone who is interested in discovering more about books.  However, occasionally, I feel that items are overlooked and not given the due recognition that they deserve.

Below you will find a few of the picture books that have not been acknowledged on multiple sites, but  I feel are worth your time to discover. I hope that you enjoy them as much as I have.

Snuggle Up with a Good Book

The weather is going to be bitter cold this weekend; sounds like a perfect excuse to snuggle up with your little ones and enjoy a good book

 Me Too! Valeri Gorbachev.

Warmth and humor fill the snowy day adventures of two friends, a bear and a chipmunk, who, despite their physical differences, share work and play and true companionship.

Experience Art in Houston

Are you new to our community? Or, maybe, you are looking for a fun activity to do with the family? Houston has so many wonderful places to visit;  one of my favorites is the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.

Before your visit the museum, stop by the library, and pick up a few of the book suggestions that I have provided. Sharing books together with your child, provides a great  opportunity to reflect upon that they think and to make fine art more relevant to them.

According to the MFAH website, there are several ways you can enjoy the museum without having to pay admission.

A Satisfying Smörgåsbord of Picture Book Choices

It's nice to have options; in fact, I think that one could say that it's actually quite satisfying. So, this week, I am highlighting a little bit of everything.  Have you read a book lately that you really enjoyed?  If so, I would love to hear about it.  Like others, I have found some of my favorite books from suggestions made by my friends.
