Love Books? Why Not Write One?: National Novel Writing Month Countdown

Calling all teen writers! Want a way to smash writer's block and get your words out? Try writing your novel in a month! I know it sounds impossible, but people have been doing it every year in November since 1999 thanks to National Novel Writing Month (aka NaNoWriMo) . Every year, teens all over the country spend the month of November simply writing. No editing allowed. Just writing. The website also has writing challenges, a message board,  and pep talks. The clock is ticking! Ready, Set, Write!

Calling All Otaku! Clubs and Cons For Teens

Are you ready to get your fan on? We are only 9 days away from Oni-Con, one of Houston's oldest anime conventions. Cosplayers are working on last minute details. I'm getting my list ready so I know which volumes of manga and anime that I need to buy and which ones I already have at home. The countdown has begun!

But what if you can't attend anime conventions or need an anime fix between conventions? Check out your local library! Click on the blog post for a list of library anime clubs for teens.

Please note, these clubs part of the Young Adult program so they are geared toward teens. If you have any questions about the suitability of the club for younger library patrons, please contact the library directly.

Teen Read Week 2010: Books With Beat

The countdown to Teen Read Week begins! From October 17th to October 23rd, libraries around the country celebrate teen reading by holding Teen Read Week activities.  This year's theme is "Books With Beat". Check out the HCPL events calendar to see what your library is doing this week.

In the meantime, check out the list below the cut for my favorite "Books With Beat".

So what's an otaku to do when you have a manga craving? Boot up your computer and head over to HCPL's Digital Media Catalog to check out our new downloadable line of manga and graphic novels.

So, how can you start downloading manga today?

What Are You Doing This Summer?

With only a handful of school days remaining, you may ask yourself, "What am I going to do this summer?" Well, you may not have as much fun as Scott (left) this summer, but you can always find wonderul things happening at your library! Check our your branch's events online here or drop by the branch for a flyer.

In addition to events, you can register for the Summer Reading Program right on this website or at your library starting June 4th. Read 5 books or 600 minutes for a certificate. Ask about additional prizes and reading levels while you are at the library.

Need volunteer hours for school? Your library can also help! Talk to a librarian about volunteering at the library.
See you @ the library!

Get Your Geek On @ 3 Local Conventions

One of the advantages of being a geek in a large city is the wonderful conventions in my own backyard. I admit it. I am a con addict. I have been going to fandom conventions since 1984 and will probably still be going when I have to incorporate my walker into my cosplay. During March and April, I have three opportunities to get my geek on with one comic/scifi/fantasy convention and two anime conventions in town.

Teen Tech Week 2010: Learn, Create, Share @ Your Library
