60 Seconds on the Internet

infographic   I heard this weekend that the world population will reach 7 billion people by the end of the week, so when I stumbled across this "In 60 Seconds" infographic while  browsing the web I stopped and really thought about how communication has grown exponentially in the last 150 years.

Gulf Coast Reads

divakaruni pictureChitra Banerjee Divakaruni, an award-winning author and poet, visited CyFair on September 14, to discuss her Gulf Coast Reads title, One Amazing Thing.

Divakaruni currently teaches in the nationally ranked Creative Writing program at the Univ. of Houston. She serves on the Advisory board of Maitri in the San Francisco Bay Area and Daya in Houston. Both these are organizations that help South Asian or South Asian American women who find themselves in abusive or domestic violence situations. She is also on the board of Pratham, an organization that helps educate children (especially those living in urban slums) in India.  (http://www.gulfcoastreads.org/about.html )

From Your Couch to a 5K, Really!

woman joggerI don't know about you all, but I'm a couch potato, and I like running about as much as I like getting a root canal.  I might even go as far as saying I loathe it.  I often joke that the only time I will voluntarily run is if I'm being chased by an ax-wielding maniac.  I've tried running before, but the shin splints I get are indescribably painful.  As much as I detest it though, running/jogging is still one of the best ways to lose weight and get in shape.  So, it's time for me to get past the loathing, pain, whining, complaining, pain, excuses, pain, did I mention pain?, and get off the couch.

Shirts & Ties for Guys

three in shirts and tiesLet's face it, guys just don't get the same resources for finding great clothes at affordable prices.  So, LSC-CyFair Branch Library and the LSC-CyFair Counseling, Career and Disability Services are taking matters into their own hands with a new program designed to supply both prom and job interview-appropriate shirts and ties for young men in high school.  In addition, the program will supply job interview-appropriate shirts and ties for male college students and community members who use the college’s career services.
