Do You Know Your World History?

On May 7, 1945 the ruling German leader Karl Dönitz sent German General Alfred Jodl to Reims, France to negotiate world war 2and sign the unconditional surrender of Germany. This would effectively end the Atlantic theatre of World War II the following day. Before committing suicide alongside his wife Eva Braun in Berlin, Adolf Hitler left a will in which he appointed Dönitz as the President of Germany. Hitler also appointed Joseph Goebbles as Chancellor of Germany but he committed suicide shortly after Hitler did. Toward the end of the war, it became common for high ranking Nazi officials to commit suicide in order to avoid capture and public execution. On the Allied side of the negotiations was Supreme Allied Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Saint Who's Day?

St. Patrick's DayHave you wondered about the origins of St. Valentine’s Day or St. Patrick’s Day? The true history of St. Valentine’s Day is much of a mystery. There are several saints that could have been associated with the holiday but February has long been regarded as a month of romance by ancient cultures like the Roman Empire.  St. Patrick is actually the patron saint of Ireland and the anniversary of his death is observed every year on March 17. It is because of his Irish background that St. Patrick’s Day, or St. Paddy’s Day, is associated with leprechauns, clovers and the color green. For books about St.

9-1-1 Emergency

Emergency Medical ResponderWe are all familiar with the 9-1-1 emergency calling system but did you know the first such system was only used 42 years ago on, February 16, 1968? The call was placed in Haleyville, Alabama by Alabama Speaker of the House Rankin Fite from Haleyville City Hall to U.S. Rep. Tom Bevill at the city's police station. Bevill reportedly answered the phone with "Hello." Now we all commonly dial 9-1-1 for emergencies and we are connected to local police, fire, and ambulance services where ever we may be. The Iranian Revolution

The History of IranThis week on February 11, 1979, Iranians will celebrate the 31st anniversary since the end of the Islamic Revolution. After growing hostility, Iranians united to revolt against the monarch of Iran under the leadership of Ayatollah Khomeini. Though the monarch opened up international ties with the United States, Iranians viewed American culture as offensive to their own belief system. Many saw the monarch as nothing more than a puppet of western society. And so began over a year of protests that would eventually dethrone the monarch Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi. The end of these protests came on the eleventh.

Going Green

Practically Green BookLiving green is as important now as it may ever be. But what exactly does living green mean? Does it mean using an alternative source of energy or buying biodegradable products? It is surprising how these green changes can affect our way of life not only by saving money in the long run, but by resulting in a better world to live in.

Año de la Patria - Year of the Homeland

Mexican Independence Day2010 marks 200 years since the beginning of armed conflict between the people of Mexico and the Spanish colonists for the independence of Mexico. This conflict would not end until August 24, 1821. “El bicentenario” or bicentennial anniversary marks the moment of “El Grito de Dolores.” This occurred on September 15, 1810 and is considered the official declaration of war against the Spanish government. The Jacinto City Library offers various books on the subject and we would love to welcome the public to come and explore one of the defining moments of our neighbors to the South.
