Happy Birthday Eric Carle!

This Saturday, March 20th, was the birthday of famous author/illustrator Eric Carle. In his honor, we held a special craft and story time. We learned a little bit about this famous man and then took the opportunity to create your own tissue paper collage art.  The program ran for one hour. We will be posting photos soon. Keep an eye out for future art/author programs!

See you soon!

St. Patrick's Day Storytime

Yesterday morning at storytime, we made special St. Patrick's Day shamrock wands. Don't miss next week's storytime! We will sing songs, do fingerplays and read stories around the central theme of farms and farmers. The craft will be Old MacDonald's farm, which you can then take home and be able to sing along to with your children. Hope to see you there!

Para Los Ninos Program - this Thursday at Stratford!

This Thursday at 5pm we will be hosting our monthly "Para Los Ninos" parent/child workshop and storytime.  The program was created by a partnership of the Children's Museum and Houston Public Library. We will be exploring the theme of "Loving Limits" and how to live them out with your child. There will be a storytime, mini-workshop, and three or four fun activities. Please join us!

A Librarian 23 Years in the Making

Get to know us here at Stratford!

Our branch manager here at Stratford, Sarah Davis, describes working in the library as a return to her first love.  As a high school student and girl scout, Sarah volunteered and worked part time in her local library in Missouri. However, upon graduation, she decided to go away to Graceland University in Iowa, where she earned her bachelor's degree in education. She later attended Emporia State for a Master's degree in Learning Disabilities. Sarah then taught various grade levels, often in special education classrooms, for 23 years. As much as she enjoyed teaching, however, she decided one day that it was time to return to a library setting.

How Much is a Dollar?

This week we would just like to spotlight one of our wonderful Stratford patrons, Yvette Gardner, a mother of a busy 3 year old daughter and regular attendee of our baby/toddler story time on Thursday mornings.

Humpty Dumpty rescued by Fairy Eggmother

Well, that may not be the traditional ending, but you never know! Story times for babies and toddlers at Stratford Library are still at 10:30 every Thursday morning, and we would love to have you join us! Next week, the theme will be Chinese New Year, the year of the TIGER.  We will have stories and crafts based off of the lunar New Year as celebrated in China.

Or, if you have children who are in lower elementary, join us for bilingual story time at 5 pm on Thursdays.  Next week will also be Chinese New Year themed for bilingual story time.

As for the theme for this week....well, you'll just have to come to find out~  See you there!

It's almost Christmas time!

As Christmas approaches, we hope you will join us for storytime on Thursday mornings at 10:30 am. While it is geared towards mostly babies and toddlers, we love to have preschoolers participate as well. Come join us for Christmas, holiday and winter themed stories, songs and crafts for the month of December~

Christmas Crafts~

Next week, as we begin our countdown to Christmas, we will also be making some fun crafts here at the library.  For that, we are in need of some supplies!  If you have any candy canes, glitter, felt, or old (but clean) gloves that you would like to donate, please stop by.  If you do not have anything you would like to donate, but have a few extra hours of your time to spare, come by anyways!  We can also use help prepping for the crafts.  So if you happen to have amazing skills with scissors, you are exactly what we need!

Looking forward to Christmas~

Hansel & Gretel

The Houston Opera to Go presented Hansel & Gretel to us at the San Jacinto Community Center a few weeks ago, and it was wonderful!  They are superbly talented, and it was fantastic to be able to host them again.  This past spring they presented Romeo & Juliet as well.  The Hansel & Gretel story brought a fairy tale to life for the children, adults & seniors in attendance.  Afterwards, they took questions regarding their own start in opera as well as the origins of the Hansel & Gretel story.  They also made sure to explain to the children what opera is since this was the first time for many of those attending.  The performance was an abbreviated version of an opera, being only about 45 minutes. We hope to host them again sometime, so be sure to keep up with our current events!
