Last Chance!

While the Friends of the Library accept book donations all year, now is the time to donate for their annual sale.  With the sale coming up Fri-Sat. March 25-26 they are working hard now to get everything ready.  This week consider donating gently used books to make room for the bargains you will pick up at the sale. 

Superhero Party!

Wear your superhero costume and come for a good time.  Thurday, Mar. 17, 4pm-5pm.  Crafts, quizzes, food.  Ages Kindergarten - 5th grade.  If you don't have superhero gear, come anyway.  You don't want to miss the fun.

The Dog Who Sang at the Opera

The Dog Who Sang at the Opera, presented by the Houston Grand Opera teaching artists.  Date: Thursday, February 17, 4pm.  Ages pre-kindergarten-2nd grade.  Summary: Pasha is a vain wolfhound who upstages the diva one night at the opera-not just any opera-but the Metropolitan Opera in New York!  True Story!  Bring your children for this free program.

Valentine's Day Craft

Calling all kids! Join us in making valentines.  Date: Thursday, February 10, 4pm.  This is your chance to make a special Valentine for your loved one.   Nothing says I love you like a hand crafted card!

Half Broke Horses

Title to be discussed: Half Broke Horses, by Jeannette Walls.  Date of meeting: Tuesday, February 8, 6:30pm.  Summary: Lily survived tornadoes, droughts, floods, the Great Depression, and the most heartbreaking personal tragedy. She bristled at prejudice of all kinds -- against women, Native Americans, and anyone else who didn't fit the mold. Rosemary Smith Walls always told Jeannette that she was like her grandmother, and in this true-life novel, Jeannette Walls channels that kindred spirit.

Movie Time

Join us in watching a popular 2010 movie.  Time: Thursday, January 20, 3:30 pm.  This PG movie was was a remake of a 1984 film and was nominated for the Teen Choice Award.  Why get on the waiting list when you can invite your friends and come see it with us.

Let's Go to the Opera!

The respected Ann Thompson presented a opera preview on Monday, January 10 at 7 pm.  She introduced Jake Heggie's Dead Man Walking and Donizetti's Lucia Di Lammermoor.  The productions will be opening at the Houston Grand Opera on January 22 and January 28 respectively.  Please join us for this informative, fun, free program!

Genealogy

Working on your family tree?  Try using the databases available through the website.  Just click on datatbases, Genealogy, and you will be able to access Heritage Quest remotely by using your library card number.  You will be able to search categories such as the Census 1790-1930, Revolutionary War, and even the Freedman's Bank.  Also plan to come by the library to continue your search in the database Ancestry.com which has numerous genealogical databases such as U.S. Immigration, Jewish Family History, and birth, marriage & death records.
