World Cup Fever

soccer ballThe World Cup is in full swing and it seems like everyone I know has developed a strong case of soccer fever. Even though I haven’t mustered quite as much enthusiasm for the World Cup as some of my friends, I have seen a few games and monitored my favorite team’s progress.

If you are one of the many people living, breathing and eating World Cup, or if you just don’t understand and want to see what the big deal is, there are plenty of great movies centered around soccer. Take a break from the World Cup (or fit in a movie while South Africa sleeps!), browse the HCPL catalog and request a soccer movie today!

That's Entertainment!

red curtainEver since I was a little girl trying to dance around the house in plastic dress-up heels, I have loved movie musicals. There is just something so charming in the calculated spontaneity of a group of strangers bursting into song or dancing down the street together. Sometimes movie musicals are bursting with glitz and glam, like 42nd Street, and sometimes they lean more towards angst, like Fiddler on the Roof. No matter the type of musical, there is always a strong thread of human emotion binding the story together.

Dolls, Soccer and Movies for Teens

The World Cup is here! If you’re a soccer enthusiast (or if you just like a good party), meet up with other teens to make an air horn, watch a World Cup game and eat! Meet in the Children’s Activity Room on Thursday, June 17 from 1:00-3:00pm.

It's a Mystery

old television setI am particularly fond of procedural crime shows. Unrealistic they may be, but I still enjoy them. I love how reliable they are. Whenever I turn on an episode, I know there will be a crime of some sort to solve and that 95% of the time the bad guy will get what’s coming to him. I love trying to figure out which suspect is the red herring and which one actually committed the crime. I love the wacky methods some TV detectives (agents, crime scene investigators…) will devise to try to catch the bad guy. Most of all, I love it when I think I’ve solved the crime, only to discover it was someone else completely.

With most current TV shows over for the season, it’s the perfect time to get hooked on a new show! Browse the HCPL catalog and request a crime show today!

It's a Bird! It's a Plane! It's a Superhero Movie!

casual superheroLast weekend I was one of the thousands of people across the country who flocked to the theater to see Iron Man 2, the much anticipated continuation of the Iron Man movie franchise. It was excellent, everything a superhero movie should be. Of course, even if the movie had been terrible, I still probably would have enjoyed it. I have a (not-so) secret love of all superhero movies – even the cheesy ones (Fantastic Four). I can’t help it! There is just something about that particular genre. The movies almost always feature great characters, a little bit of romance, a lot of heart, a battle between good and evil and, most importantly, plenty of improbable action sequences. What could be better?

Iron Man 2 may still be in theaters, but there are equally wonderful superhero movies already on DVD. Browse the HCPL catalog and request your favorites today!
