Community Novel: Meet the Author

Dean Larson

Were you shocked with last year’s cliffhanger of Tomball Library’s Community Novel, Air Within a Jade? Allow us to tease you with another chapter, before our long-awaited Book Launch Party, where all will be revealed about the characters that you love and hate in the strange town of Atheneum. Local author Dean Larson penned this chapter, and shared the following about himself:

He has had a life filled with interesting people of all stripes. In the twenty-five years he spent counseling addicts and their families in hospitals, mental institutions, mental health centers, a prison, and finally, in his own outpatient treatment facility, he ran groups and counseled convicts and clergy, adolescents and elderly, wealthy and impoverished. The settings did much to break down class distinctions, and taught him to see people rather than titles. He learned to love people as unique individuals, whether addicted, mentally ill, behaviorally-challenged, or just down on their luck.

He had a side career in music that ranged from playing lead guitar in a trio that performed primarily in dark smelly bars, to performing symphonic music as “principle last trombone” in a regional symphony orchestra.

Dean hails from a family who was in love with language and the magic of words. Dinnertime conversations, when he was a child, were often discussions of philosophy or theology or books. It was there that he learned to appreciate the music and sounds, rhythm and color in words. However, he was engrossed in the mending of broken lives, and had little time for anything but professional writing. Until now.

After all the years of storing up things to express, the Tomball Community Library Writing Project offered him a gift: a chance for him to put it all on paper for others to read. Dean’s efforts in this project have been done with gratitude and great anticipation for more writing.

Thanks to Dean for his chapter and to all of the participating authors that made this first community novel such a successful project. The Book Launch Party will take place at Tomball Library during the summer, so be on the lookout for our announcement. Authors will sign copies of the printed novel, which will be available for the first time.

We have great news to share!

Recently the Friends of the Tomball Community Library applied for and received a community donation of $2500 from the H-E-B Tournament of Champions Charitable Trust. This donation will be used to strengthen the early literacy initiative at the Lone Star College-Tomball Community Library through the addition of books to the Children’s collection, as well as support for Choo Choo Club (a weekly early literacy program held during the school year) and story times. We are very excited about this opportunity!

The H-E-B Tournament of Champions is an annual golf tournament currently in its 34th year that raises money to support organizations and programs that positively impact youth in Texas. The Children’s team at the LSC-Tomball Community Library is honored to have been selected as one of the community recipients this year. Early literacy concepts form the foundation of all learning, and the Children’s team is excited to continue to offer quality programs and services that help children flourish.

Thank you, H-E-B Tournament of Champions! #HEBTOC

LSC-Tomball, Tomball ISD and Harris County Public Library Partner on Tomball Community Art Showcase

Tomball Community Art Showcase FlyerArtists of all ages in the Tomball area now have a way to exhibit their creative work.  A new partnership comprised of Tomball ISD, Lone Star College-Tomball and the Harris County Public Library announced the launch of the Tomball Community Art Showcase.  The showcase will exhibit visual and performing artwork created by students from Tomball ISD, LSC-Tomball and by local artists from the Tomball area.

A grand opening celebration, which will be free and open to the public, is planned for Thursday, March 21 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the LSC-Tomball Community Library, which will also be the home for the Tomball Community Art Showcase.

“This is truly an extraordinary partnership that is indicative of the collaborative culture of the City of Tomball. We are committed to providing access and educational experiences that extend beyond the college campus and benefit the Tomball area community,” said Dr. Lee Ann Nutt, President of LSC-Tomball.

The grand opening celebration will highlight select creative works by Tomball ISD art students and LSC-Tomball students will provide live entertainment.  Light refreshments will be served.

“The Tomball Community Arts Showcase is an amazing opportunity for our district to continue our dynamic partnership with LSC- Tomball and begin a rich collaboration with the Harris County Public Library,” said Dr. Martha Salazar-Zamora, Tomball ISD Superintendent of Schools.  She is especially excited about the partnership’s impact on Tomball. “The commitment to education, the arts and our community makes Tomball a Destination and we are honored to have the opportunity to showcase our talented students’ artwork in a beautiful space.”

The LSC-Tomball Community Library has created exhibit areas throughout several common areas in the library.  Plans are underway to provide secure display cases for fragile pieces and valued collections.

Janna Hoglund, HCPL co-director of the LSC-Tomball Community Library, believes there are a lot of talented artists of all ages in the Tomball area and providing a venue to exhibit these works will enrich the community, “We are thrilled to be partners in the effort to organize exhibitions and educational programs that offer enjoyment and engagement with art of all kinds that’s been created by local students and members of our community.”

Community Novel: Meet the Author

Air Within a Jade, the Tomball Library’s first community novel, is moving right along. In honor of Throwback Thursday L. Piper(#tbt), we thought we’d highlight L. Piper, the author of chapter 3 of the novel, which was written several months ago. She shared the following:

“Originally from the East Coast, 'L' spent most of her childhood in Houston. She has worked as a secretary, waitress, actress, counselor, newspaper reporter, stand-up comedienne, and joke writer. Her writing has been selected for Rice University’s Glasscock School of Continuing Studies Writers’ Gallery, published in both local and national publications, and earned awards in various Texas and Oklahoma writing groups. A member of Sisters In Crime, and a bookseller with Barnes & Noble since 2007, L’s favorite book recommendations fall in the Domestic Psychological Suspense category. 'L' has a humorous mystery in the editing stage, but she’s most excited about the manuscript she hopes to finish this year -- a novel of dark, psychological suspense.

“When 'L' is not working at the bookstore or thinking up a scene for her novel, she enjoys: walks with her husband and their rescue dogs, laughing at Tonight Show episodes with her brother, and dreaming of visits to her wonderful step-children and grandchildren.”

Thanks to L. Piper for contributing her talents to the Tomball Community Novel! Read her chapter and more on the Tomball Tales website here.

Also, in case you missed it, the library is hosting a Cover Art Contest. If you are artistically inclined, click here for more details on how to enter. One lucky person will have their art featured on the cover of Air Within a Jade. Entries are due by October 20, 2018.

Community Novel: Meet the Author

Air Within a Jade, the Tomball Library’s first community novel, is now on chapter thirteen, with seven more chapters to go. If you haven’t yet had a chance to read the novel, now is the perfect time to start. All available chapters are located on the Tomball Tales website, along with author bios, which are released at the same time as the author’s chapter.

This week’s chapter was written by Alpana Sarangapani, a familiar face to many at the library:

“Alpana Sarangapani is a Reference Librarian at Lone Star College-Tomball Community Library. She enjoys working, helping, and sharing information with people. She believes that ‘Life is a school of learning’. She enjoys writing stories (not many have read them), and to work as part of a team, so this was a perfect project for her.”

Thanks to Alpana for her chapter and to all of the participating authors. We can’t wait to see what comes next in the story, and hope you are as excited to read along.

If you missed it earlier this week, Lakisha Sparrow, the organizer of the community novel, was featured in a lovely article on the Houston Chronicle’s website. Read it here for a glimpse into the process of creating a community novel.

Community Novel: Meet the Author

author photoThe Tomball Library’s first community novel, Air Within a Jade, is still going strong with 11 chapters now released on the Tomball Tales website. Also on that website are short author bios to introduce readers to each of the contributing writers. This week’s chapter was written by CS Sandlin, who shared the following:

There is generally a gentle sound of canine snoring underfoot while CS is working. Ergo, coffee. The tension between sleep and caffeine forms the backbone of CS’s writing, along with frequent walks through Mercer Arboretum to enjoy the Texas sunshine (or Texas cloudiness, especially in the summer).

A poet and short story writer, CS maintains a blog at Moon Pools and Mermaids for current projects and inspirations, and is currently working on a novel.

Thanks to CS for her chapter, as well as to all of the authors participating in the community novel!
