The Thankful Tree

tree   tree

Tis the season to give thanks! This month in the Children's Area we have our very own Thankful Tree. This beautiful bouquet of branches stands on top of the first set of picture book shelves and is waiting to be filled with colorful paper leaves. All you have to do is ask for a paper leaf at the Children's Desk, write (or draw) what you are thankful for, and give it back to a librarian to hang on the tree.

Today, we are thankful for many things, but at the top of the list are our wonderful library customers, good books, and the Houston Astros winning the World Series!

We'll be adding leaves to the Thankful Tree all month in preparation for Thanksgiving. Don't miss it!

NaNoWriMo - Come Write In

typewriterCalling all writers! National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is an annual event that encourages people to write a complete 50,000 word manuscript during the month of November. NaNoWriMo isn’t focused on perfection, but rather on pushing through and finishing a project.

If you are participating this year and in need of a peaceful place to write, look no further! Twice a week during November, we will serve as an official Write In location, providing a quiet space to write, or a chance to network with other writers.

These Come Write In sessions will be held every Thursday in November (except Thanksgiving, when the library will be closed) from 5:00-8:30 pm, and every Monday in November from 8:00 am–12:00 pm. The room varies, so ask a librarian to point you in the right direction. Make sure you have all your writing necessities with you!

For more information, call the library at 832-559-4200.

Program: News of the 1870s World

news of the world

During the month of October, libraries in the upper Texas Gulf Coast region celebrate Gulf Coast Reads, an initiative that focuses on bringing communities together through reading and discussing one pre-selected book. The 2017 pick is the historical fiction novel News of the World by Paulette Jiles.

In News of the World, the main character, Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, travels across Texas in 1870, reading newspapers from around the country to people in remote locations. On Saturday, October 7, join us to hear actual news from that time period from a library crier! All articles thanks to the Portal to Texas History.

News of the 1870s World will take place in the library lobby on Saturday, October 7th starting at 2:00 pm.

For more information, call the library at 832-559-4200.
