Dinosaur Fossil Program

Fossils were the focus of this week's children's program.  Dr. Neal Immega shared some of his fossil collection with young readers and talked about going on dinosaur digs.  If you happen to be up near Fort Worth, you can see actual footprints at the Dinosaur Park. The Brazos River also still yields dinosaur fossils even today.  That is where Dr. Neal tripped over the large fossil of a knee bone that the children are examining in the photo.  After the talk, children were able to examine the fossils up close and colored a mini dinosaur flip book created by Mrs. Immega.

Animals that dig

Animals that dig were the featured guests at the Library this week.  The Traveling Naturalist brought reptiles and mammals who like to burrow.  96 children and 50 adults attended the program which featured a snake, turtle, hedgehog, bunny tarantula and toad.  Afterwards, children lined up to pet the turtle and lion-headed rabbit.

Next week we will have crafts on Tuesday at 3 PM and Origami on Wednesday at 3 PM.

Magic at the West U Library

Our summer programs started off with an exciting magic show featuring local magician, Steve Burton.  The audience was amazed by the fabulous "How'd he do that?"  tricks. We were fortunate to have the program at the newly renovated senior center next door to the Library.  Their auditorium accomodates large crowds.

All Library  programs are free and are listed on the West U Library website.  Calendars are also available at the Library.

Visit the Library website at www.hcpl.net to sign up for the summer reading program.  Children who read [or have read to them] 10 picture books - or read on their own for 5 hours or 500 minutes - will receive a free paperback book, a certificate and a food coupon from a local restaurant.

Volunteers needed to help shelve children's materials

If you have a couple of hours once a week to spare and like to be in a cheerful, colorful atmosphere, the Library needs help shelving children's materials upstairs. The primary areas of shelving are picture books, juvenile fiction and non fiction.  The librarians will help you start with a complete orientation about the children's collection, where and how to shelve the items.  If you are interested in volunteering, call the Library at 713 668-8273 or stop by and introduce yourself to Libby or Margaret.

Humphrey is settling in

Humphrey the hamster is settling in at the West U Library. He sleeps a lot during the day but wakes up about 5:30 PM to begin his nightly activities.  Humphrey loves to run on his wheel and has discovered the joy of hiding in the plastic strawberry.  Sometimes he mounds a pile of paper fluff to barricade the doorway.  Recently Humphrey took a break in his activities to pose for photos.
