Cookbook-CheapI just discovered that, among many others things, October is National Cookbook Month.  So, I thought it would be a good time to remind you that Harris County Public Library has thousands of cookbooks!  Not just cookbooks for fun desserts, we also have them for diabetes-friendly or gluten-free foods, main courses, foreign foods, vegetarian and vegan foods, and just about anything else you can imagine.  Tired of the same old stuff?  Stop by and see what we have!

Free Seminars for Job Seekers & Career Changers

MeetingThe Fairbanks Branch of Harris County Public Library is partnering with Workforce Solutions to offer a series of free workshops for people who are searching for jobs or looking to make a career change.  All of the workshops will be at Fairbanks Branch Library at 7122 N. FB SRP winner All of the participants who logged 4 books that they read over the summer into HCPL’s adult summer reading program, ReaderNation, were entered into a random drawing for Amazon.com gift cards sponsored by the Harris County Friends of the Library.  The Fairbanks Branch customer who won a $50 gift card was Christy R.  Christy is an emergency veterinarian and the owner of a bird, a guinea pig and a couple of hamsters.  Christy’s mother was always reading to Christy and her sister and taking them to the public library when they were children.  So, Christy grew up with a love of reading and libraries.  Every time she moves to a new town, the first thing she does is find the nearest grocery store a

Volcanoes!

This week marks the anniversary of two of the most famous volcanic eruptions in history.  On August 24, 79 A.D., Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying the town of Pompeii in ash and preserving a pristine record of life in the Roman Empire.  On August 27, 1883, Krakatoa, in Indonesia, exploded, killing 30,000 people, changing weather around the world, and creating the loudest sound in history.  The explosion was heard as much as 3000 miles away!  You can find adult books, children’s books, and DVDs about volcanoes under the call number 551.21.  These are just a few:

We have scheduled the FREE computer classes for August 1-13 in the library meeting room.

Computer Classes!!

Computer classYes, the Fairbanks Branch is finally able to offer computer classes!  With the arrival of our Technology Training Assistant, Mr. Kenneth Flowers, we are now offering computer classes in the library meeting room.  We will start with a Computer Basics class on Monday, July 25 at 1:00.  Then on Saturday, July 30, we will offer a Basic Internet class at 12 pm and a Basic Microsoft Excel class at 3 pm.  Please stop by the customer service desk and let us know if you will be coming.  [Clipart © Microsoft.]
