Libraries Need Your Help

HelpOn Tuesday, January 11, the Texas Legislature started their 2011 session.  The #1 thing on their agenda is covering a $27 billion budget shortfall.  We need your help to minimize the damage to libraries.  Please contact as many state senators and representatives as you can and let them know how important libraries are to you and your community.  You can find out who YOUR representatives are at the legislature’s “Who Represents Me?” page.  You can also fill out a "Texans Love Libraries" card here in the library and we'll pass it on to the legislators for you.  The Texas L

Tax Forms Delayed

Tax FormsRemember all that talk on the news about Congress voting on whether to continue the “Bush tax cuts” or not?  Well, because the final tax rates were not established until December 17, the printing of the income tax forms and instructions was substantially delayed.  The library staff will put the forms in the front hallway as soon as we can.  In the meantime, they can be printed from the IRS web site.

Pride-Prejudice

I don’t know about you, but every New Year I make resolutions to eat healthier and to exercise, and I never accomplish either. Homework Help - Big Time!

World BookI used to think that World Book Online was just the World Book Encyclopedia posted to the internet. Now I know it’s much more than that. There’s an entire section on science projects. There are over 10,000 biographies and you can search for someone to do a report on by choosing the gender, nationality, and time period that fit your assignment. There are timelines that you can use or edit, or you can create your own timeline. The Spanish-language section (Enciclopedia Estudiantil Hallazgos) has links to newspapers around the Spanish-speaking world. There are thousands of photos and maps (including historical maps).

What's New?

Did you know there’s a quick and easy way to find out what new books, movies, etc., the Harris County libraries have gotten lately? Just click the “New Titles” link on our home page, and you can select the categories that you’re interested in -- adult fiction or nonfiction, juvenile fiction or nonfiction, CDs, DVDs, and many more. The resulting list will give you links to the catalog records of all items in that category that have been cataloged in the past 30 days.

Where did they go?

LostYou probably knew exactly where your favorite nonfiction books [like the cookbooks] were and could walk straight to them. Well, they’re not there anymore. We had lots of space in the nonfiction, and the fiction was packed so tightly that we kept having to get rid of books to make room for new ones. So, we have moved ALL of the adult nonfiction to make more room for fiction. Change is good, right?
