We Found Them for You

Worldwide webLooking for information on the internet using a search engine can be overwhelming. Do you ever wish you had a list of good web sites to go to for this or that? You’re in luck, because HCPL’s web staff has made lists for you. To get to them, click our Websites tab and look in the “Find” box on the left for the categories. The “Ready Reference” category includes links for dictionaries, directories, conversions, and translations, among other things.

We’re a Little Bit Country and a Little Bit Rock & Roll

MusicWhen you think of the library, I bet you don’t think of music CDs. You should, though, because Harris County Public Library has over 9600 titles. [I found out by typing “sound recording music” in the catalog search box on our home page. You can find the music you’re interested in by adding the genre, the artist, or a title to the search terms.] We have all genres, including rock, pop, country, R & B, classical, Latin, gospel, jazz, and others, plus tons of music for kids. Check it out! It’s a great way to test-drive a CD before you decide whether to buy it.

FREE SAT Practice Test

SAT guideIt could be the most important (and expensive) test of your life! What could be better than taking a practice test for FREE? The Princeton Review is offering a free SAT practice test on Saturday, April 24th, from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm at the Fairbanks Library. They will come back two weeks later, on Saturday, May 8th, from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm to give students their scores and a detailed analysis of what looks good and what the students can do to improve their scores. Call the library at (713) 466-4438 to register to take advantage of this priceless opportunity. Can't make it to the session? Check out one of our SAT study guides!

Help With Census Forms

FormHopefully, all of you got a form from the US Census Bureau to fill out so that the federal government will know how to distribute its money and political power. The Census Bureau is sending someone to the Fairbanks Library almost every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday afternoon until April 19 to help people fill out their forms. You can call the library at (713) 466-4438 to find out the exact days and times that the Census Bureau representative will be here. Or you can call the Census Bureau. The phone number for English speakers is 1-866-872-6868. For people that speak other languages, the Census Bureau web site has additional toll-free numbers.

Be Your Own Mechanic

MechanicIf your car needs some kind of maintenance or repair and you would really like to do it yourself (for the satisfaction or to save a lot of money), but you don’t quite have the confidence to tackle the job, take a look at our Chilton ONLINE Auto Repair Manuals. There is a very good chance that they will have the information you need. Just put the year, make, and model into the “Vehicle Selector,” select “Repair” or “Maintenance,” and choose what you would like to work on from the lists. There are even VIDEOS of how to do some of the repairs!!

’Tis the Season – for Planting!

Flowers

It’s that time of year when we can use yard work as an excuse to stay outside and enjoy the nice weather. If you’d like some expert gardening advice, the Harris County libraries have hundreds of gardening books, including some that specialize in Texas gardening and my personal favorite, low-maintenance gardening. Flower gardening and vegetable gardening are both in the 635s in the Dewey Decimal system. Any staff member would be glad to help you find them.  [Clipart from jupiterimages.com.]
