Events for Kids & Teens, October 30-November 4

MeanwhileTweens Read, for ages 10-14, Wednesday, Nov. 1, from 4:30-5:30. We’ll talk about books, play games, and have a snack. This month’s choose-your-own-plot style graphic novel, “Meanwhile” by Jason Shiga, is available at the checkout desk. Even if you haven’t read it, come anyway!
Our brand new Doctor Who Club will meet for the first time on Saturday, November 4, from 1:00-2:00 pm. Talk about everything Doctor Who-related, from the beginning to the present, from books to tv. For teens and adults.

News of the WorldYou missed the first one, so we’re offering another one! A discussion of the 2017 Gulf Coast Reads book, “News of the World” by Paulette Jiles, that is. It’s on Monday, October 30, from 6:00-7:30 pm. [Read this book. It's great!]
Our brand new Genealogy Club will meet for the first time on Wednesday, November 1, from 2:00-3:30 pm. Do your own genealogy research and share techniques with other enthusiasts. For adults and teens.

Medicine wagonWe have some great events for adults coming up next week.
Texas Pioneer Life: Wednesday, 10/25, 5:00-6:00 pm. An expert on life in Texas in the 1800s will bring lots of artifacts that you can actually touch! For all ages.
Free Medicare workshop, Saturday, 10/28, 10 am – noon. It’s Open Enrollment time, so this is especially important now. Even if you’re not on Medicare yet, though, if you’re over a certain age, you should start gathering information about it.
Bandana Pumpkin Craft, Saturday, 10/28, 2:00 pm. Get in an autumn mood by making one of these cute little pumpkins. (for adults!)

Weird Science: Play with your Food, Monday, 10/23, 4:00-5:00 pm. Explore the science of doing weird things to your food. For ages 7-11.
Tween/Teen Movie Night, Tuesday, 10/24, 4:30-6:15 pm. Watch the weird, funny adventures of Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Wednesday, Pugsley, Cousin It, Lurch, and Thing.

Volunteer to Teach the English Language!

Adults at library tableHCPL is always in need of volunteers to teach English as a Second Language to adults. We provide the materials and we will train you. We are offering a tutor training session at the Aldine Library on Thursday, October 19, from 12 - 4 pm. If you are interested, please register through our branch events calendar here and feel free to call if you have questions. It’s a great way to help the people of your community!

Special Events for Kids Next Week

Duct tape projectsParents, do your kids spend hours each day playing video games? Would you like to get them on the road to turning that hobby into a career? Let them join us on Monday, October 16, from 4:00-5:00 pm for our Coding with Kids program. They will learn how to create, animate, and more with the program Scratch. We will give them a take-home packet so that they can continue learning after they leave the class. For ages 8-12.
Also, on Wednesday, Oct. 18, it’s time for another Craftastic program! This time we will be making craft projects with duct tape. We have plans for 4 projects, or you can bring your own. For ages 12-18.
