Sidewalk Project

As you may have noticed, The City of Houston is replacing the sidewalks along Airline Drive and Dyna Drive. Today, the City began to work on the sidewalk along the entrance to the Aldine Library. A hydraulic crusher broke the concrete at the library's driveway this morning in the first phase of the project. Your vehicle can still enter and exit the parking lot at this point. Later, perhaps next week, another City of Houston contractor will tear up the concrete and replace it. We'll keep you updated as the project continues.

Parking Lot Resurfacing @ Aldine

Dear Aldine Patrons,

The Aldine library parking lot is getting a badly needed resurfacing / refinishing. The resurfacing project will begin on Thursday, March 28th. The project should be finished, we hope, by the morning of Tuesday, April 2nd. However, weather is a factor so it may take more or less time to complete it.

The library parking lot will be unavailable on Thursday, March 28th, Saturday, March 30th and Monday April 1st. The Aldine Library leaves it to our patrons to find suitable parking in the area. At all times, the resurfacing crew will provide a route for walkers, bus riders, and wheelchairs to get into the building.

Thank you for your patience during this time.

Come On Get Happy!

Who wants to be happy? If you want to feel good fast you may want come on over to the Aldine Library and check out the book Happiness Now by Dr. Robert Holden.

Here is some wisdom from the author that retailers probably don't want you to hear: "unless you are happy with yourself, you won't be happy with what you have; no amount of purchases, products, or possessions can give you peace of mind." This is very true. Still, as Holden writes, we still keep trying to find a special thing that will make us happy. Instead of a change of wardrobe we need a change of mind. To be happy we must give up self judgment. Check out Dr. Holden's book at Aldine and read more about how to be happy now!

Anti-Valentine's Day Celebration

black rose

There was a Valentine celebration of sorts for teens at the Aldine Library on the afternoon Thursday, February 7th- an anti-Valentine celebration to be exact. Homemade, miniature catapults flung candy hearts. Black roses were crafted.  A piñata was broken and candy enjoyed. Why? To celebrate unrequited love and broken heartedness!

It was a memorable afternoon.

Welcome, Maggie!

The Aldine Library has a new addition to its staff: Ms. Maggie Block, Young Adult Librarian! Maggie was born in raised in upstate New York. Her mother is a third generation Houstonian. She is excited to be back in the city of Houston. Maggie completed her Master of Library Science education in July 2012 at Indiana University. She has been volunteering and interning at small town Indiana libraries since 2010. Before coming to Houston, Maggie worked as the assistant teen librarian at Plainfield Indiana's library. We are glad to have her on board. Welcome, Maggie!
