October Reminders

I can't believe it's October already.  It seems as if just yesterday we finished the Summer Reading Club here at Lone Star College-CyFair Library.  The fall has certainly been hopping with activity and a visit has more to offer than ever.

First, we have a new storytime running this fall.  It's our Multicultural Storytime for all ages on Tuesdays at 1:30pm.  This is a cooperative program with students from the English as a Second Language Class here on campus.  The students are getting a wonderful opportunity to practice their English and the children get a wonderful storytime that introduces many cultures.

Second we are gearing up for the 5th annual Cy-Fest celebration this Saturday, October 10th from 10am -2pm.  The entire campus will be buzzing with food, games, crafts and activities for the whole family.  Come down and join us for this fun day.

New "All Age" Storytime Coming Next Week

Many times we are asked, "Why can't you have more storytimes?" or "Why don't you have an all-age, daytime storytime?"

Well you wishes have finally been answered!

We are lucky enough to be teaming up with the English Department on campus to offer a new Multicultural Storytime on Tuesday afternoons at 1:30pm staring September 22nd, 2009.  The students from ENGL 0308 have been looking for a funway to practice their English skills and we jumped at the chance to be able to offer another program to our community.

Each week the students will take turns reading some of our favorite books.  They will also occasionally be sharing stories in their native languages which will also be translated into English for everyone

This storytime will be limited to 35 children of any age and, as most of our programs, tickets will be handed out in the hour prior to the storytime.

The ABC's of Keeping the H1N1 Flu Away

While talking to a class of students yesterday I was reminded of one of the best ways to keep the H1F1 at bay....Knowing your ABC's!  That's right, by knowing how to sing the alphabet song or your ABC's, you too can help stop the spread of the H1N1 flu.  The Center for Disease Control recommends that you wash your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds under warm to hot water.  Since it takes about 20 seconds to sing through your ABC's fully, it's the perfect song to sing while you are wshing your hands.  Want to mix things up a bit?  Try singing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" instead.  It also works great for this, and if you haven't figured it out already....it's the same tune.  Let's get everyone singing while washing your hands!  It makes an often forgotten about task much more enjoyable.

Drumming Program at Lone Star College-CyFairOnce again, we had a wonderful Summer Reading Program this year at Lone Star College-CyFair Library. We had 1368 children register this year which was the highest number of any of the Harris County Public Library branches. Go Cy-Fair!

We also had well over 7000 children and 3000 adults attend our 270+ programs this summer which included such activities as a Dr. Pepper Party, County Line Dancing Lessons, Drumming with N8 Rhythm, Texas Snakes, Knitting and Crocheting and much, much more.

Be sure to check out our photos of all the fun times we had this summer on our Flickr Page.
