Tomball German Heritage Festival

If you are looking for a fun and culturally stimulating activity for this weekend, head up to Tomball for the Tomball German Heritage Festival.  This annual festival celebrates the heritage of the original Germans who settled this area in the 1840s and is held in Old Tomball near the Historic Train Depot Plaza.

Homework Help

Starting in April, the Katy library will be offering weekly homework help.  This program will be every Wednesday at 6:00pm.  All ages are welcome at this drop in session. This help will be for basic homework issues.  If we don't know the answer, we will try our best to find it!  No registration is required for this program.  For more information, please call the branch.  281-391-3509

Roald Dahl's #Imaginormous Challenge Writing Contest

Roald Dahl's #imaginormous Challenge is here!  Do you have a child between the ages of 5 and 12 with a wacky imagination and a love for writing?  This contest may be for them!
 
 Roald Dahl's stories all started out as just a few lines written in various idea books. Out of these books came the tales we all love, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, and  Fantastic Mr. Fox.
 

Para los Ninos Bilingual Storytime

Join us on Wednesday, March 8th, at 6:00 pm for our Para los Ninos Bilingual Storytime!  Our topic this month is Math at Home.  The activities will demonstrate how math is used every day in the home and how you and your child can easily work on those skills.  Para los Niños is a fun, educational, bilingual workshop designed by the Children’s Museum of Houston for the whole family. We will be reading stories, singing songs and enjoying hands on learning activities that will make your child’s learning fun and exciting. This program is designed for children age 3-7 years old. Each family will be given a family ticket to the Children's Museum at the conclusion of the program. Space is limited and tickets will be handed out 30 minutes before the program

Dr. Seuss Birthday Party

 

We will be having a birthday party for Dr. Seuss on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at 4:00pm.  Join us for yummy birthday cake and a movie based on a beloved Dr. Seuss character.  

Love to write short stories?

The Texas Association of Authors is hosting it's 3rd Annual Texas Short Story Writing Contest.  If you fancy yourself a writer, this is a great chance to submit your work for prizes and possible publication in a short story collection.
 
The contest is open from March 1, 2017 to July 31, 2017.   The author must live in Texas and the story must be between 1500-3000 words in length.  If you think you have what it takes, please go to the Texas Shorts website for more information.

Watch a Banned Book today!

September 25, 2016-October 1, 2016 is Banned and Challenged Books Week. 

It is no surprise that many of these titles are well loved by many, and have been made into great films.  This list includes classic literature, children’s books and contemporary fiction titles. Treat yourself to a movie based on a banned or challenged book today!

There are many more movies based on banned books. Which one is your favorite?

The Great Gatsby In 1920s Long Island, a mysterious American millionaire's efforts to recapture the sweetheart of his youth result in tragedy.  There are two great versions of this film.  One released in 2013, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan, and one released in 1974, starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow.
