The month of April we have a beautiful display of hand painted eggs. The egg has always symbolized the rebirth and renewal of the earth in spring celebrations. Take a moment while you are at the Library to look at these handcrafted treasures.

PHOEBE ON HER NEST - A HUMMINGBIRD LIVE WEBCAM

Last week I stumbled upon a website http://cam.dellwo.com which features a live webcam of a hummingbird nesting. She has two tiny eggs which are in the process of hatching. Check it out and I guarantee that you will be mesmerized by this close-up view of one of nature's tiny treasures. While you are enjoying the website, you should check out these books which will answer your questions about hummingbirds: A Field Guide to Hummingbirds of North America by Sheri L.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND MOVIES TEEN COMPARISON

In celebration of Teen Tech Week we will be hosting a movie event showcasing two older versions of "Alice in Wonderland". Come Wednesday at 3:30 pm to watch, eat popcorn, and explore the differences modern technology has added to this classic tale.

CAT IN THE HAT TO VISIT STORYTIME

cat in the hatStorytime will have a very special visitor on Tuesday, March 2 at 10:15 am. In honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday the Cat in the Hat will join Mr. D and Miss Mandy in telling some of his favorite Dr. Seuss stories. Come join the fun!

BLACK HISTORY MONTH CRAFT

Wednesday, February 24 at 3:15 pm the Children's Department will celebrate Black History Month with a fun craft time.  Come create an underground railroad lantern and learn about the history of the underground railroad. The program is for all school age children and is free. All materials are provided.

AUTHOR DICK FRANCIS DIES

Sad news has arrived for mystery readers. The author Dick Francis died on Sunday, February 14. As a former jockey who had a spectacularly successful career, he brought that experience to his books which centered on the horse racing world.

AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY CROSSWORD PUZZLE KIT TO GO

Test your knowledge of African American history with a collection of crossword puzzles. These fun and educational kits to go can be picked up at the Information Desk. Celebrate Black History Month with us and enjoy the puzzles.

CHINESE EXCHANGE STUDENT VISITS LIBRARY

Chinese studentWe had a very special visitor to the La Porte Community Library Wednesday. Her name is Dong Yushan and she is one of the students from China who are visiting La Porte for a week. This is part of an exchange program between LPISD and Yushan's school Nankai High School. Yushan is interested in becoming a librarian so she spent the afternoon with us learning what goes on in an American library. She asked many thoughtful questions and was particularly interested that all the library services are free. We truly enjoyed Yushan's visit and wish her well on her career path.
