Teen Tech Week

This week Maud Marks celebrated our first Teen Tech Week.  Local teens and tweens came by the library on Wednesday and Thursday this week to learn coding.  They were able to program their very own computer games with the help of our new Young Adult Librarian, Ms. Lauren.  At the end, they were even able to play the very games they created.

Missed all the fun?  Don't worry we have more fun activities for the teen and tween age group coming up.  This next Thursday, after school, we will be hosting a Divergent party to celebrate the release of the upcoming movie.  And every Thursday at the same time we will be having various other activities such as movies, game days, or crafts.  Come join Ms. Lauren for all the fun!  Check out our calendar for what will be happening each week.

Live a Healthy Life

With all the health and nutrition information out there, it can be confusing to figure out how to choose a balanced, healthy diet.  Why, just this week I read 2 articles (both dated this week) about eggs.  One article told me eggs were not as healthy as the Egg Council claims.  Another article told me that eggs were not as unhealthy as previously thought.  What are we supposed to think?

Well, at the Maud Marks Library, we want to help!  Next Saturday, March 8 at 2 PM, Jan Flewelling, a nurse with Houston Methodist will be here to help straighten out all that information.  She'll be discussing a holistic approach to healthy living including eating right, exercising, and other aspects of living your best life.

Pre-registration is required so click here to let us know if you will be joining us.

Celebrate the African American Heritage!

This year, the Maud Marks Library has decided to go BIG in celebrating the African American Heritage.  How big?  Jazz Education, Inc. will be here on Friday at 1 PM to play some jazz music perfect for dancing.  Afterwards, we'll make some African masks, jazz collages, and even work together to turn one wall in the children's section into a giant Freedom Quilt.  While working on our projects, we'll munch on food important to African American history.  Join us as we celebrate the contributions of the African American culture.

It's ALMOST Here!

Tax season is here and W2s have started to arrive.  Beginning this Monday, February 3 at 10 AM- 2 PM, AARP will be here to help you do your taxes.  They will be here every Monday and Friday through April 14 to help you get the money you deserve back from the IRS.  This is a first come- first served service so make sure you are here early.  (But not too early, doors don't open until 10 AM.)  Check out our calendar for a complete schedule in February.

Green Thumb Gardening Announcement

Did you come to our canceled Green Thumb Gardening presentation on soils and composting by the Master Gardeners of Harris County?  We apologize for the last minute cancelation.  But, good news!  This class has been rescheduled for THIS Saturday, January 25 at 9 AM.  Please show up just before this time and someone will let you in.  Everyone interested in our new Green Thumb Gardening series should show up for this important presentation.

Again, we apologize for the inconvenience and hope to see you on Saturday.

Discover Your Roots

What do you know about your family's past?  Have you ever wanted to learn more about your great great grandfather?  You can learn about all this and more by just delving into your family's genealogy.  This Saturday, the Bear Creek Genealogical Society will be at the Maud Marks Library to help you with just that.

Learn how to track down that elusive ancestor.  Find out what happened on that boat which brought him to the new world.  Or, find out how to find a historical military record to apply for one of the many college scholarships out there.

Everyone has a story.  Come to the library on Saturday at 2 PM to find yours.

Seating for this and many other programs are limited.  Click here to register.

What's YOUR New Year's Resolution

OK, so what was your New Year's Resolution this year?  What ever it is, Maud Marks can help you reach your goal.  Was it to spruce up your lawn and garden?  Join us for our new gardening series on the third Saturday of every month at 10 AM.  On January 18, we'll be discussing Houston soils and composting.

Did you want to learn to use a computer or the new device your relative insisted on giving you for Christmas?  We have an e-book class coming up on Thursday, January 9 at 10 AM and other computer classes all through the month.

Did you want to try your hand at something new and crafty?  You might be interested in our DIY craft series.  January 8 at 2 PM we will be making 3D snowflakes.

Did you want to track your ancestors and find out more about your past?  Bear Creek Genealogy Society will be here on January 18 at 2 PM to show you how it's done.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town!

Santa is on his way!

School is out early for the Christmas break on Friday and you know what that means!  Santa is coming to the Maud Marks Library.  Join us this Friday from 1-5 PM as we celebrate our annual Santa's Ranch.  We will have special treats, games, crafts, and holiday music.  Make a gingerbread house, or get your facepainted.  And, of course, don't forget to visit Santa himself.

The Maud Marks Library would like to thank the Friends of the Maud Marks Library and musical groups from Taylor High School for making this day possible.

Lose the Confusion!

By now we all know that the Healthcare.gov website is very confusing.  We want to help sort it out for you!  On Saturday at 10 AM experts on the Affordable Care Act and the Health Insurance Marketplace will be here to clear up all the confusion.  Find out what you need to know before the new law kicks in on January 1st.  Remember, in order to have health insurance by the January 1st deadline, you must have a plan in place with your first payment made by December 15th, so there is no time to lose.  Sign up for this important seminar today by visiting our calendar.

You Click, We Click, One Click

We have more e-Audio books than you can find in just our Digital Media Catalog.  We also have our One Click Digital Database.  These books can be checked out online and downloaded to your computer or your device.  They are always available and can be renewed.  Best of all, if you don't renew them, they return themselves so there are never fines!  Sounds interesting?  Come to the library tomorrow night at 7 PM to learn how to use this really cool collection.  Seating is limited so click here to sign up.
