Fun Children's Programs to End January

Here are a few fun programs to end the first month of the year.   We continue with the weekly Maker Monday programs at 4:30 pm.  This afterschool program is for children 5-12 years old.  It features an activity or craft.  Today, children will be making a winter suncatcher.  Tickets are required.  They are free and available at the Kids Information Desk starting at 4:00 pm.

Baby Playtime returns to Freeman Library this Friday, January 15 @ 10:00 am!

Babies from infants through 18 months old have somewhere to be this Friday, January 15 at 10:00 am!  They and their parent or caregiver are invited to hang out in the Children's Activity Space for Baby Playtime.  This program is held several times a year as a special chance for babies and their adults to spend time together with board books, fun toys, and bubbles.   We also will have an art project for the babies and we will debut a new item for the babies to explore!   No tickets are needed for this program.  A special thanks to the Friends of Freeman Library for their continued support for this program through the fun items we're able to purchase.

January brings more fun programs for children

Freeman children can start off the new year by attending a fun program this month.  On Mondays, we continue with Maker Monday programs for children 5-12 years old at 4:30 pm.  These weekly afterschool programs feature an activity or a craft.  On Thursday January 28, children 5-12 years old can help us get ready for Mardi Gras by decorating a shoebox float at 4:30 pm.  Tickets are required for these programs.  They are free and given out 30 minutes before the program.

Ring in the New Year with colorful crafts!

Children 3-12 years old are invited to make some crafts on Thursday, December 31 at 2:30 pm.  We'll be making some colorful crafts to ring in 2016: jingly noisemakers, a New Year's crown, and a fun collage to practice writing out the new numbers 2-0-1-6!  Tickets are required.  They are free and available at the Kids Information Desk starting 30 minutes before the program.  The crafting supplies are provided by the generous donations of the Friends of Freeman Library.   The library will be open 1-5 pm on Thursday.

Gingerbread House Decorating - one more day of fun!

Join us Tuesday for a Freeman tradition: decorating gingerbread houses.   This program is recommended for children 3-12 years old.  We will have two sessions: 2:30 pm and 4:00 pm.   Tickets are required for this program.  They are free and distributed 30 minutes before each program.  However, due to the popularity of this program, we recommend that children and their adult arrive about 15-20 minutes before the tickets are to be given out.

The gingerbread houses consist of a milk carton base (donated by Oak Farms Dairy) along with graham crackers, frosting, and lots of decorative goodies (donated by the Friends of Freeman Library).

Gingerbread House Fun starts next Monday, December 21!

Join us for a Freeman tradition: decorate an edible gingerbread house!  This festive fun will be on Monday, December 21 at 2:30 pm and Tuesday, December 22 for sessions at 2:30 and 4:00 pm.  The gingerbread house fun is recommended for children 3-12 years old.  Tickets are required.  They are free and given out 30 minutes before each program.  This event always is well-attended, so we recommend that children and their grownup arrive 15-20 minutes before the tickets are given out.   The gingerbread houses are made of graham crackers, frosting, and lots of goodies.  Oak Farms Dairy generously donated milk cartons to use as a base for the house and the Friends of Freeman Library generously paid for all the goodies used to decorate the houses.

December Events in the Children's Department

Join us in December for fun and festive programs.   We will have our regular storytimes for young children in the mornings and early afternoons as well as the weekly Maker Monday programs for school-age children 5-12 years old.  These programs at 4:30 on Mondays will feature a Mosaics kit (12/14), a Lego kit (12/21), and a fun holiday craft of a thumbprint picture frame (12/28).  Tickets are required.  They are free and given out 30 minutes before we open or right when we open for 10:15  programs.

Check out our butterfly exhibit in the Children's Department

Harris County Public Library celebrates Citizenship Month with a display of information on how to become a U.S. citizen.  Included with this display, we also have a neat butterfly exhibit that parents as well as children can enjoy.  The displays are on a table right before you get to the Children's Department.

Right now, we're in the chrysalis phase with the butterflies.  We'll have updates through the stage when we have colorful butterflies.

If you have a chance, please drop by the Children's Department to see how the exhibit is developing.
