Databases for School Research

If you are looking for resources for your research project, remember to take a look at the numerous databases we have available for free with your library card. These databases provide free research articles and information that you can use for your projects. You can also access these databases from any library computer.

Learning Express Library - Practice Exams

Learning Express Library provides free access to practice exams for examinations such as the ACT, SAT, AP exams, and the GED test. But did you know Learning Express Library also has occupation practice exams? You can use this database to practice for tests such as the Postal Worker Exam, the Cosmetology Exam, TExES exams, and much more.

You can find the Learning Express Library database by visiting our website, www.hcpl.net, clicking on Databases, and then selecting Education & Libraries. The Learning Express Library database also has a Computer Skills Center where you can learn how to work with software such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Adobe Photoshop. Learning Express Library is free with your library card.

Spooky E-Reads

If you're looking for fun craft and cooking books to dive into this October, make sure to check out OverDrive's Spooktacular Cooking & Crafts e-book collection. You'll find tons of creative cooking, craft and costume ideas to put together, including knitting crafts, ideas for parties and snacks, and fun do-it-yourself cosplays. E-books are free through our OverDrive and Libby apps using your library card number. 

If you haven't had a chance to stop by the library for a free library card, you can always get instant access to our e-materials by signing up online for your iKnow Digital Library Card.

 

Computer Class: New Time

Starting in October, computer classes in English will take place on Wednesdays at 1:30 pm. Computer classes in Spanish will continue to take place on Thursdays at 10:30 am. Next Wednesday, October 3, at 1:30 pm, the topic will be Microsoft Excel Basics. Come and learn how to create tables and format them with different styles. Hispanic Heritage Month Craft: Hispanic Basket

This week, teens ages 14-17 will have the opportunity to design their own Hispanic Basket using colorful yarn. Teens are invited to come by the library this Thursday September 27 at 4:30 pm for this fun craft. All materials are provided courtesy of the Friends of the South Houston Library.

Chilton Library Database

The Chilton Library Database provides information on vehicle maintenance and repair, and includes a Vehicle Selector tool, step-by-step repair procedures, diagrams, illustrations, and photographs. With your Harris County Public Library card, you can access the Chilton Library Database absolutely free. You can also access the Chilton Library from any library computer without a card. Hispanic Heritage Month Craft: Mini Piñata

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the South Houston Branch Library invites you to join us for several fun programs. This Thursday, September 20, kids ages 8 to 13 will have the opportunity to create their own “Mini Piñata” and fill it with candy. Join us for this fun activity at 4:30 pm. All materials will be provided by the Friends of the Library.

Free Computer Classes

The South Houston Branch Library offers free computer classes for adults every week. Tuesdays at 10:30 am we have computer classes in English, and the class subjects repeat on Thursdays at 10:30 am in Spanish. Classes are free and no registration is required. Take a look at our online event calendar to view our upcoming classes.

Internet Basics

Are you interested in learning how to use the Internet? Join us at our next free computer class Tuesday, September 11 at 10:30 am, and learn how to visit websites, perform searches, and change your Internet settings. We will visit popular websites for news, information, directions, job searches and more. No registration is required.

Learning Express Library

Did you know that Harris County Public Library provides free access to the Learning Express Library database? This database has GED practice tests available in the areas of Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science, and Social Studies, and includes a GED en Español section as well. Adults are invited to join us this Saturday, September 8 @ 1:30 PM to learn how to access this valuable resource with a library card.
