About this Branch

Evelyn Meador Library is a unique designation. The library is a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certified building. The Evelyn Meador Library boasts many sustainable features, such as the recycled content of some construction materials; a building that takes in expansive views of the nearby park; and lots of natural light provided by windows that are protected during storms by roll-down hurricane shutters. Other environmentally friendly elements include water-conscious landscaping, energy efficiency, materials chosen for better indoor air quality and outdoor lighting designed to minimize light pollution to surrounding areas.

When you enter our library, you can feel it – a draw toward voices low and muffled or animated and energetic, to sunlight streaming through the windows, lighting books and people and everything in the building. You may hear the sound of children laughing. You see huddled heads in a meeting and smiles from the library staff. Linger over a beautiful book or an absorbing magazine article while allowing your mind to roam. Nearby, from a cooking class wafts the scent of baking apple pie, which reminds you that you need to go by the grocery before dinner. Your gaze takes in the soaring ceilings, the beautiful furniture, artwork, and colors that decorate the building. Outside, the trails of Seabrook beckon you to take a walk.

History

The Evelyn Meador Branch Library opened on June 26, 1988. The library was begun in 1985 when five interested Seabrook residents met with Commissioner Jim Fonteno to inquire about getting a branch library built in Seabrook. In 1985 the City of Seabrook, with the blessings of Rex and Evelyn Meador, donated to Harris County six acres of land originally given to the City by the Meadors. The original library building was heavily damaged by Hurricane Ike in 2008. With funding assistance from the City of Seabrook, a new state-of-the-art, environmentally green facility was completed in 2011 and opened to the public on June 28 of that year, two days after the 23rd anniversary of the original opening of the library in 1988.

Dog or fur child? The line is a bit blurry as dogs are becoming more and more a part of the family.

What is the obsession with true crime? Instead of scaring us, as it should, we are absolutely fascinated.
