Computer Class Information

  1. Because of the demand for these classes, please give at least 24 hours notice if you cannot keep your reservation.
  2. If you are more than five minutes late arriving to class, you will lose your reservation. No one will be admitted to the class ten minutes after the start time.
  3. We do have a waiting list for full classes. Please use our internet online registration form to be put on this list. Click Here
  4. For fairness to all, Please sign up for only 1 class/project at a time within the same course. After attending that class/project, then sign up for the next class/project within the same course. There is a registration limitation: please do not register for more than 2 projects of the same course in a calendar month.
  5. Please register for classes no more than 30 days in advance of the current date.
  6. Certificates of completion are given for Basics, Internet & Email (8 hours), Word & Excel (24 hours), and PowerPoint & Publisher (8 hours). A certificate of accomplishment is given for the completion of all 7 classes (40 hours).

Class Descriptions

This format is used to encourage continued interest in the classes and therefore increase attendance. The purpose is also to make these classes practical / fun for those who do not necessarily need these skills for the workplace.

Class Prerequisites

For MS Word, MS Excel, Introduction to the Internet, and Introduction to Email

  • Be very familiar with using the mouse.
  • Be familiar with location of the keys on the keyboard ( You need not know how to type using normal keyboarding skills however.)
  • Be familiar with minimizing, opening and closing windows.
  • Be familiar with Windows file management
  • OR, have learned to do the above after taking the Computer Basics class at this library twice.
  • In addition to the above prerequisites, you must have taken Word - Project A plus one other Word project at the library before taking either the MS PowerPoint or MS Publisher classes.

Microsoft Office Classes

In these classes the participants are taught the basics in each session. To accomplish this the participants do a variety of projects as they learn the basics. A different project is emphasized in any given 2 hour session. Participants must come to several classes to complete all the projects offered.

MS Word Projects – Class Schedule code letters

(Ex. Word-A or Word-B indicates what project is to be taught that day)

  1. Copy / Cut / Paste from the Internet, Job Forms or other documents / Keyboard shortcuts
  2. Word Art / Using Images from Cameras & from the Internet / embedding sounds
  3. Making / Merging mailing labels
  4. Word Wrapping around images / Drawing Tools / Web Page Creation
  5. Greeting cards / Tables for personal address book / Columns
  6. Removing private information in documents before emailing them, Using Find / Replace (including editing emails received before forwarding them); Making Forms; paragraph formatting; fonts

MS Excel Projects- Class Schedule code letters

(Ex. Excel-A or Excel-B indicates what project is to be taught that day)

  1. Editing Cells / keyboard shortcuts / moving around cells / formulas / cell formatting
  2. Sorting; searching; printing; freezing panes; password protecting sheets
  3. Card Game Club scores / adding / totals; Charts
  4. Family budget
  5. Creating a personal checkbook; Statement Reconciliation
  6. Averaging student grades /averaging any numbers / Mortgage curtailment / Amortization schedules / Car Loans / Investment results

MS PowerPoint Projects - Class Schedule code letters

( Ex. PP-A or PP-B indicates what project is to be taught that day )

  1. Basic slide show development
  2. Slide show animations

MS Publisher

  1. 3-panel brochures, grouping objects, WordArt, etc.
  2. Business cards, mailing labels with images, etc

Computer Basics 1 and Computer Basics 2

In both classes of Computer Basics 1 and Computer Basics 2 the participants are taught the basics in each session. A different subject matter is emphasized in a given 2 hour session. Participants must come to both classes to complete the series.

Computer Basics 1 ( Project Code A )

Topics : Parts of a computer, how to use a mouse, keyboard tips, computer care, backing up files, Windows tips

Computer Basics 2 ( Project Code B )

Topics : Windows file management, computer user ergonomics, Computer and internet security
