About the Branch
The Jacinto City Branch Library was built in 1992. The building, the Albert "Bert" Holder Memorial, is a replacement for the original branch, which still stands on Mercury Drive in Jacinto City. Part of that original building was once Jacinto City's city hall. It is currently the local office of the area's state representative. The current building stands on city property across from Akron Park in a residential area.
Jacinto City Branch is a cooperative effort between the City of Jacinto City and Harris County. The city built and maintains the facility, while the county furnishes staff and materials. This cooperative agreement has been in force since 1957, when a local resident, Mrs. Dorothy Bowyer, spearheaded the effort to obtain a library for Jacinto City. Mrs. Bowyer also served as the Branch Librarian from 1958 – 1989, when she retired.
The Library is named after a former mayor of Jacinto City, Albert "Bert" Holder (1925- 1991), Mayor 1957-1971, 73-75. His picture hangs in the library as a gift from the Holder family.
The Friends of the Jacinto City Branch Library sponsor an ongoing book sale in the library. They accept books and audiovisual materials in good condition for these sales. All money raised is used to support the branch library in materials purchasing and in programming.
