About the Katy Branch
The Katy Library was built in 1940, and is one of the oldest library buildings in Harris County. The Katy joined the Harris County library system in 1921. The library was originally started by the Katy Garden Club and housed in private homes, as well as a grocery and furniture store. It later shared space with the Katy Fire Department. When first opened the library only offered 12 hours of service per week. Today, it is open 40 hours a week. The Friends of the Katy Library were organized in 1973 and still play an active role in the library today.
Construction began in 2002 on the new Katy branch. The grand opening was on Sunday, April 27, 2003. The library reopened for regular business on Monday, April 28, 2003.
