About the Octavia Fields Branch
The Octavia Fields Branch Library re-opened on June 27th, 2001. Public library service started in Humble, Texas in 1921 with 114 volumes housed in the High School. In 1923 the collection outgrew the available space and was split between the High School and the Woodyard School. Each school provided a teacher to take charge of the building's library. In 1926 the library moved again, this time to a church; by 1928 the space in the church was outgrown, and the library moved into the (then) new Humble Court House.
In the early 1930's it moved to City Hall, and in 1932 the City Hall Court Room was made part of the library as a reading room. In the early 1960's a house and lot were donated at First Street and Avenue D. After remodeling it opened and was renamed the Shelton Memorial Library in memory of Tom Shelton, who had donated the site.
On October 9, 1969, the library moved once again, to 111 West Higgins, and was renamed the Octavia Fields Memorial Library in memory of Mrs. Fields, grandmother of former Congressman Jack Fields. The Fields family continues their support of the library, with many of them attending the Grand Opening of the current facility.
The new facility has caused a growing interest in the Friends of the Octavia Fields Library adding to the currently active friends group. If you would like to know more contact the branch or stop by sometime.
