South Houston Library is located on Avenue A between 6th Street and 7th Street. From I-45 S take the College Avenue exit. Turn left under the overpass. Continue on College Avenue to Highway 3 (Old Galveston Road). Cross Highway 3 and continue east (College Avenue becomes Spencer Highway after Highway 3). Turn left on 6th Street. Go two blocks and turn right on Avenue A. The library is on the left. (Key Map #536X)

About the South Houston Branch

The current building was opened in May 1991. The library originally began in 1927 when Margaret Black started loaning books from the local jail. In 1937 money was raised to build a small fame structure to house the library. This structure still stands in the park next to the current library building. During the 1950s the library moved again – this time it shared facilities with the welfare office and a clinic. In 1967 the City of South Houston acquired land and purchased a barracks building from Ellington Field and moved it to the acquired land. The library was housed in this building until it moved into its current home in May 1991.

The current building was a cooperative effort of Harris County, the City of South Houston, the Harris County Community Development Agency with funding provided through a grant from the Library Services and Construction Act.
