Green Thumb Gardening Series: Basic Yard Maintenance

Garden toolsSoon the weather will get warmer and it will be time to enjoy your garden again.  Before you can start hosting your backyard barbecues, however, you may want to spiff up your garden by following a few basic practices.  Harris County Master Gardeners will be happy to share their best advice on yard maintenance in their first presentation of 2018.

If you are at least 55 years old, then we hope you will consider joining us for a day trip on Thursday, February 1. The Precinct2gether bus will depart from the Freeman Library parking lot. Please plan for plenty of walking and wear comfortable, rubber-soled shoes.

Happy New Year for Adult Crafts!

Photo of 2018 Origami display made by staff member Ms. DerryIf you stop by the library this month, please take a look at the marvelous origami exhibit in the display case that highlights the major events in the Houston area for 2017 and wishes everyone a Happy New Year in 2018. Made by our own Ms. Derry, this display exhibits some varied uses of origami.

Ms. Derry teaches a Beginner Origami Class at 11 am on the first Thursday of every month. Registration is required. Please call 281-471-4022 or stop by the Circulation Desk to register. 

We also have a Crafting for Adults class that is normally on the first Saturday of every month at 10:30 am. But in February, it will be on a different Saturday...soon to be announced. Our own Ms. Irene will lead the class in making beautiful Fabric Decoupage Easter Eggs. Registration is required, so please call 281-471-4022, or stop by the Circulation Desk to register.

Both classes fill up quickly!

All craft classes are free. All materials supplied. For Ages 18+. 

3D Printer Orientation: MakerBot

makerbot printNorth Channel will have a 3D Printer Orientation for the MakerBot Replicator on Monday, January 8th, at 6 PM. 

This orientation session will introduce participants to 3D printing services in the library. Those completing the class will then be able to schedule time to use the printer after receiving hands-on training.
Class size is limited. Recommended for ages 8 - adult. Participants under age 12 must be accompanied by an adult/guardian. Register online, or call the library to register.

If You Can Read This . . .

If you can read this, you can help someone learn to read. Harris County Public Library will train you to be a volunteer (unpaid) literacy tutor and will supply you with materials. You would be teaching an adult, one-on-one. There will be a free tutor training at the Aldine Library on Thursday, February 22, from 1:00-4:00 pm. Community Craft – Vietnamese Noodle Salad and Bake-A-Plate [All Ages] Friday, January 12 at 4 PM

 

As the New Year comes around again, we start shifting our focus to healthier eating.

Join us at the Parker Williams Branch on January 12th at 4 PM in the Library Community Room to learn how to make a Vietnamese Noodle Salad.

Children are invited to draw on a ceramic plate that will be baked in the oven making their scribbles permanent.

Food and family fun will ensue!
