Program: Native Prairie Plants for Your Garden

Photo by Chuck Duplant - Native Prairie Plants at Lawler Deer Park Prairie PreserveJoin us on Saturday, February 10 at 10:30 am, when Lan Shen, a board member of the Houston Chapter, Native Prairies Association of Texas (HNPAT), will tell us about the nearby Lawther - Deer Park Prairie Preserve, and how you can use the native plants of the coastal prairie in your own yard.

Ms. Shen describes the program:
The coastal tallgrass prairie was the predominant habitat of Harris and surrounding counties for thousands of years in pre-European settlement times. Prairie plants were what the early settlers saw when they settled here. Today, the tallgrass prairie is almost extinct in Harris County. A platinum quality remnant of this prairie can be found here in the center of Deer Park at the 52 acre Lawther - Deer Park Prairie Preserve.

Many gardeners today only know plants that had been imported from other countries and no longer know our beautiful native plants that used to grow here without added fertilizers, without irrigation, without pesticides. I would like to introduce you to these native prairie plants, talk about their growing conditions and sources for these plants.

Free! No registration required.
