News of the World[For adults & teens] You’re probably not aware of this, but, every October public libraries, school libraries, and college libraries all over southeast Texas participate in an event called “Gulf Coast Reads.” The idea is to get as many people as possible, from Columbus to Beaumont and Willis to Galveston, to read the same book at the same time so that they can talk about it with their families, friends, coworkers, fellow bus riders, fellow elevator passengers, and anyone else.

Adults - Friday, 9/29 - The TGIF Programs Friday Film Series returns @ 10:15 AM

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we look forward to showing a 2001 film based on the Julia Álvarez work of historical fiction. This film stars Salma Hayak, Lumi Cavazos, and Edward James Olmos.

This free event requires no registration. The Friends of Freeman Library provide the film, refreshments, and support for this TGIF Programs' event. After this event, the DVD of the film will be added to the HCPL collection. Please contact the Clear Lake City - County Freeman Branch Library by visiting us at 16616 Diana Lane, Houston, TX 77062 or calling 832.927.5420 for further information.

Gulf Coast Reads 2017-Coming in October!

Book Jacket: News of the World: A Novel by Paulette JilesIn October each year, residents of the upper Texas Gulf Coast take part in Gulf Coast Reads, a program in which people read or listen to the same book and attend book discussions and special programs about the book.

This year the Gulf Coast Reads selection is News of the World by Paulette Jiles, an historical fiction novel set in Texas: “In the aftermath of the Civil War, Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, an elderly widower and itinerant news reader, is offered fifty dollars to bring an orphan girl, who was kidnapped and raised by Kiowa raiders, from Wichita Falls back to her family in San Antonio.”

This well-researched novel has something for everyone: men, women, and young adults. It gives a fascinating, fact-filled history of the time in early Texas, combined with a compelling, well-written story. Both history buffs and those who love a good read will enjoy!

Our book discussion on News of the World is on Monday, October 16 at 6:30 pm.

On Saturday, October 21 at 10:30 am, we will have a related program: ‘Early Newspapers in Texas’ by Lisa Struthers, Director of the Herzstein Library at the San Jacinto Museum of History. Lisa will talk about the newspapers at the museum library, and she will also tell us about her library’s involvement with The Portal to Texas History program, which is an initiative to digitize old newspapers from library collections in Texas. (This effort to put newspapers in digital format is something our library is interested in considering for La Porte.)

Both events are free and open to all! Please join us for one or both programs!
