Program: Terra Nova Children's Home

Cover of Brochure for Terra Nova Children's Home-ZambiaJoin us to hear the fascinating story of Terra Nova Children’s Home in Zambia founded by La Portians Tom and Amy Morrow! Monday, November 6, at 7pm. Free. For all ages!

Fifteen years ago Tom and Amy Morrow traveled from La Porte, Texas to Zambia with their six children who were between the ages of 4 and 11 years old. There, while working in impoverished areas, they discovered that there are over 1 million orphans in a country of only 13 million people. They also found a big gap in support for orphaned children who were below school age. By the time they reached school age, they already had years of malnutrition. Tom and Amy had a desire to step in and fill the gap.

In 2006, after substantial research and work with a local transit home for orphaned babies, the Morrows located and purchased an abandoned building in Kazembe—a large village in northern Zambia—and began construction. Electricity had to be installed, a borehole drilled, and pipes laid. After one year of hard work, the doors to Terra Nova Children’s Home finally opened.

Terra Nova is now a happy home to over 30 children who have found a new family and are now growing up healthy, secure, and safe—receiving a quality education so that they will grow up to not just be an orphan statistic, but a contributing member of society. Come hear their story!

Project Pumpkin - Day 2

This is Day 2 of Freeman Library's 2017 Project Pumpkin program.   This Freeman tradition features several pumpkins decorated by library staff using paint and other materials but no carving is done to the pumpkins.   The pumpkins were generously donated by HEB and many of the art supplies used on the pumpkins have been purchased through the Friends of Freeman Library.   This year there are 8 pumpkins decorated as classic children's book characters or other popular culture figures.   Today's pumpkin is Poppy  - inspired by the troll in the movie Trolls.  Children and adults can vote for their favorite pumpkins through October 31.  The pumpkins with the top 3 votes will be revealed on November 1.
