Magic: The Gathering Deck Building [8+] - Saturday, September 8th from 6-7:30 PM

 

Magic: The Gathering is a dueling card game from Wizards of the Coast.

It incorporates strategy, mythical lore, and competitive-community play.

Join us on the Saturday, September 8th at 2 PM to learn the basics on how to make a competitive deck and search through our library of cards to make your own in-house use deck.

September is Library Card Sign Up Month!

School-Aged Kids' Tuesday program: Library Card Holders 

 Tuesday, Sept. 4th @ 4:45pm

Make your own library card holder to keep your library card safe and ready to use!

This program is for children ages 5-12. A free ticket is required. Please pick up the ticket at the Children's Information Desk 15 minutes prior to the program.

September Programs in the Children's Department

It's a new school year...We have many returning programs and a few new programs for the month of September.  We kick off the month on Saturday, 9/1 with Family Storytime at 11:00 am.  No tickets are required for this program.  We will have another Family Storytime on 9/15.

Maker Monday returns on Monday, 9/10 at 4:30 pm.  This afterschool program is for children 5-12 years old.  It features an activity kit or craft each week.  We'll have pinball on 9/10, Lego Free Play on 9/17, and Magnetic Mosaics on 9/24.

Baby Playtime for infants up to 18 months old will be on Friday, 9/14 at 10:00 am.  No tickets are needed for this program.  Toddlers will enjoy their playdate on Friday, 9/28 at 10:15 am.  Tickets given out at 10:00 am.

Homeschool Support Group

Starting in September, we will be offering a Homeschool Support Group. Each month, we will highlight a different theme and discuss with suggested materials. In September, we will be meeting on September 15th and the theme is Reading Aloud / English Language Arts & Reading. 

Variety of backgrounds, religious beliefs, and lifestyles are encouraged. We come with an open mind and words of encouragement. Reflect, pick brains, grow, and plan for the future.

Children's Weekly Run Down!

CHILDREN’S WEEKLY RUN-DOWN! We will be taking a break for the rest of this month from special programming. Next Month will be the start of our school year programming so stay tuned!

Our Story times continue as normal! Be here for Toddler Time* on Tuesday @ 10 AM and @ 10:30 AM, Infant Lapsit Storytime* @ 11:15 AM on Tuesday and @ 11 AM on Thursday, and Preschool Storytime* on Wednesday @ 11 AM. We also have our Family Storytime presented on Saturday @ 10:30 where you can enjoy stories and a craft!

*Tickets required upon entry. Pick up your free ticket at the Children's Reference Desk before entering your story time. Tickets will be given to the first 30 children and their caregivers the day of the scheduled event.  

Children, Teens, and a Love of Reading

Book Buddies AldineDo you have a child in kindergarten-3rd grade? Do you want to help them develop a love of reading?
Do you have a teenager in 7th-12th grades? Does she want to be a mentor? Does he need service hours? Then he or she could volunteer to be a Big Buddy!
Harris County Public Library's Book Buddies program pairs trained teen volunteers (Big Buddies) with children in kindergarten through 3rd grade (Little Buddies). For 10 weeks, the Buddies meet once a week for 45 minutes of shared reading.

Weird Science at the Library

SlimeIt's time to SLIME! Create ooey-gooey, colorful, glue-based slime in this fun kids-centered activity! Don't worry parents, it's washable! Monday, October 27, at 4 pm. For ages 6-12.

New Fall Children's programs

Wednesday Preschool Story time - 11:00 AM

Starting Sept. 6th, join our new Children's Specialist, Taylor, on Wednesday mornings for Preschool Story time.

Come sing, read, and make crafts with Miss Taylor!

Little Engineers - Tuesdays, 2 PM

We are introducing a new 6 week class for preschoolers (3 to 6 year olds). This class will include hands-on activities with Lego Early Simple Machines that investigate wheels, gears, axles and pulleys.

Passport Services @ Barbara Bush Library

The staff from the Harris County District Clerk's office will be returning to process U.S. Passports next week. Walk-ins are welcome, but you can call 832-927-5690 to make an appointment. NOTE: the last walk-in customer will be received 30 minutes before listed closing time. This applies to all locations.

Passport Services will be held during the following days and times in our Earl Elliott Meeting Room:

Tuesday, August 28th from 1pm-6:30pm
Wednesday, August 29th from 1pm-4:30pm
Thursday, August 30th from 1pm-6:30pm

Toddlers in Motion on Friday, August 24 @ 10:15 am

  Looking for a chance for your toddler to burn off some energy on a Friday morning?  Join us this Friday, August 24 at 10:15 am for Toddlers in Motion.   This program features songs, movement, and a fun playtime.   Chilrden are encouraged to dress in comfortable shoes and clothes because they'll be dancing around as they learn new concepts.   Tickets are free,  They are available when we open at 10:00 am.   Thank you to the Friends of Freeman Library for supporting this program with toys and supplies.
