New Storytime Schedule!

The Kingwood Branch Library will be opening tomorrow, Tuesday the 29th, and we will be starting our regularly scheduled storytimes for the year! 

Toddler Time is @ 10 AM and @ 10:30 AM every Tuesday, tickets required upon entry. Pick up your free ticket at the Children's Reference Desk before entering your story time. Tickets will be given to the first 30 children and their caregivers the day of the scheduled event. 

The first Tuesday of each month will also have a special Sensory Storytime @ 2:15 PM: an interactive and educational story time that caters to children with special needs. *Sensory story time uses sight, sound, and touch to engage children in this hands-on learning program!

Lapsit Storytime is @ 11:15 AM on Tuesdays and @ 11 AM on Thursdays. 

Summer Reading Program Software Presentation

Are you excited for Harris County Public Library's Summer Reading Program? This summer's theme is Libraries Rock! and the program will begin on June 4th. Throughout the summer we will be having many activities for all ages, as well as fun prizes participants can receive for reading. We will be having two presentations that will show you how to log your books and minutes read using our Summer Reading Program software in order to help you become familiar with the program. We invite all ages to attend our Summer Reading Program Software Presentation next Thursday May 31 at 5:00 PM, or in Spanish on Wednesday May 30 at 5:00 PM. We will provide information on how to create your account and record your reading and activities to get points for your prizes. 

Country Club: Japan *bonus program!

Experience a little taste of Japan with an introduction to some Japanese words, dining etiquette and learn how to use chopsticks! Children will make their own California roll and candy sushi roll with our friends from Benihana.

Program is open to grades 1-5 and kindergarteners with an adult.

Time: 4:00-5:00 p.m.

*Parent/legal guardian must sign waiver for child/children to participate in this program.

Space is limited. Registration begins at 3:30 p.m.

Storytimes are starting back up on June 4th!

The children's department has been busy getting ready for a super fun Summer Reading Program! We've had a few questions about storytime starting back up now that the branch is open. We will start storytimes again on Monday, June 4th which is also the first day you can sign up for summer reading! The schedule is posted below, but in the meantime drop in to say "hello" and see our awesome new children's area.

*Please note that free tickets are required and will be available 15 minutes prior to the storytime at the reference desk. 

Mondays at 2pm- Lapsit (ages 0-15 months)

Tuesdays at 10:15am- Preschool Storytime (ages 3-6 years)

Tuesdays at 2pm- Preschool Storytime (ages 3-6 years)

Free Taiko Performance May 19 @ 3:00 PM

In honor of Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, South Houston Public Library invite you to join us for "Kaminari Taiko Thunderstudies" - an amazing @kaminariTaiko #kaminariTaiko performance that will take place on Saturday, May 19 @ 3:00 PM at the Pavilion located in the park next to the South Houston Branch Library located at 607 Avenue A, South Houston, TX, 77587.

Touch A Truck [All Ages] - Saturday, June 2nd at 10 AM

The Parker Williams Branch Library will be hosting its first Touch A Truck event on Saturday June 2nd from 10 Am to 1 PM in the east parking lot.

The Harris County Public Library Curiosity Cruiser will be on site. We will have the our local Precinct 2 Constables and Southeast Volunteer Fire Fighters vehicles and personnel to visit with.

We will also have our local Civil Air Patrol squadron from Ellington Field with their emergency services equipment.

Last but not least, Texas Pride Disposal will have a garbage truck here.

Please join us for a good time looking at all the different vehicles that help us live and learn everyday. 

Country Club: Japan

Join our library “Country Club” and we will “visit” a different country each month to sample food, language, culture, games and more!
In celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, this month we will stamp our passports in Japan.

Get extra stamps in your passport for attending our bonus Country Club programs on May 19 and May 23.

Date: May 16

Time: 4:00-5:00 p.m.

This program is for grades 1-5 and Kindergartners with an adult.

Space is limited. Please arrive early to ensure participation.
Registration for after-school programs opens 30 minutes prior to the program.

Busy week of programs in the Children's Department May 14-19

   The Children's Department has a busy week of programs coming up on May 14-19.   On Monday, May 14  -  children 5-12 years old can make a magnetic mosaic during Maker Monday at 4:30 pm.;  On Wednesday, May 16 - children 8-12 years old will enjoy learning about the book The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler during the May Book Club program at 4:30 pm.  We'll have a brief discusstion and then see a film adaptation of the book.   On Thursday, May 17 - we'll celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month with crafts and a treat at 4:30 pm.  This program is recommended for all ages.  On Friday, May 18 - babies from infants through 18 months old have a playdate at 10 am.

Art Camp at Katy Library

This summer, the Katy Library is thrilled to present Art Camp in conjunction with the Museum of Fine Arts Houston this summer!

Art Camp is a partnership between the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and Harris County Public Library.   Art Camp is for children ages 6 to 12 and will be held at the Katy Branch Library June 11-15, 2018 from 10:00 am to noon. This is a free program that is open to 25 applicants. Participants must be able to attend all five days of the camp. A waiting list will be kept for those who still wish to sign up after the intial 25.

Community Craft – Star Wars Origami [All Ages] - Thursday, May 17th at 4 PM

 

Combining our love of the Star Wars Universe and celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, our children’s Community Craft will be Star Wars Oragami!

Learn to make different characters and creatures from the Star Wars Universe while using Japanese paper folding techniques.

The fun begins at 4 PM on Thursday, May 17th in the Library Community Room.
