What is ReadyRosie?

ReadyRosie is an early education tool that is currently helping schools and communities across the nation deepen and scale their parent engagement efforts by leveraging the power of video modeling and mobile technology to meet and equip parents where they are. ReadyRosie has hundreds of brief videos in English and Spanish that model everyday interactions in familiar environments with real parents.

All it takes is 2 minutes a day.

Monday, 8/21 @ 12 PM - Eclipse Over Houston!

Join the Lunar and Planetary Institute, the Freeman Library, and SciArt Exchange for this historical event. We will be viewing the Solar Eclipse outside live and streaming in the Marge Jacobson Community Room.

**Please, NEVER look directly at the sun or a solar eclipse without proper viewing equipment. Eclipse viewing glasses will be distributed at the event.**

The Friends of Freeman Library support this event. 

Family Storytime this Saturday, August 19 @ 11:00 am

  Looking for something fun for the family on a Saturday morning after a breakfast of blueberry pancakes?  Join us at 11:00 am for Family Storytime.  This free storytime for all ages features books and songs.  It lasts about 30 minutes.   Family Storytime is held on the first and third Saturdays of the month.  No tickets are required for this program.  It is held in the Children's Department.   Thank you the Friends of Freeman Library for supporting this program with books and other materials.

Baby Playtime fun on Friday, August 18 @ 10:00 am

Babies and their grown ups are in for a great morning this Friday, August 18 at 10:00 am at Baby Playtime.   This free program is recommended for babies from infancy to 18 months old.  The babies can play with fun toys and board books.  They also can have fun chasing after bubbles!  This program does not require tickets, so babies and their grown up can just drop by the Children's Activity Space when the library opens at 10:00 am.  Thank you to the Friends of Freeman Library for their generous support for the toys and books in this program.

Faithful Paws

Faithful Paws is back! School-age children can come to the library this Saturday, August 19 at 2 pm to practice their reading skills on a specially trained dog who can't wait to hear a good story! This is a great way to build confidence going into the new school year!

Chapter Chats

Crenshaw Cover ArtNow that summer is almost over, we are prepping our afterschool programs for kids. The first one starting in September is Chapter Chats. If you love reading and want a place where you can discover and talk about great books, Chapter Chats is for you!

This school year, Chapter Chats will meet on the first Tuesday of every month. The first program will be on Tuesday, September 5th at 5:00 pm. This book club is for kids ages 8 to 12. We will be talking about the book Crenshaw by Katherine Applegate. Crenshaw is a book about friendship and how all friends, real or imaginary, can help us through tough times.

Registration is strongly encouraged for Chapter Chats. To register and pick up a copy of the book to read before our first meeting, please stop by the desk in the Children’s Area.

Solar Eclipse Viewing Fun at the Library!

 Join us for our first ever partial solar eclipse viewing at the library! Viewing glasses provided along with cold refreshments. Maximum eclipse phase will be about 1:15 PM. No pre-registration required. Free for all ages! We will gather in the parking lot on Monday, August 21 at 1:00 pm.

Children's Weekly Run-Down

CHILDREN’S WEEKLY RUN-DOWN! Back to school time is here and we are ending the Summer with a concert by Andyroo and the Andyrooniverse on Monday the 14th @ 7 PM!

We will be taking a break for the rest of this month from special programming.

Our Story times continue as normal! Be here for Toddler Time** on Tuesday @ 10 AM and @ 10:30 AM, Infant Lapsit Storytime @ 11:15 AM on Tuesday and @ 11 AM on Thursday, and Preschool Storytime on Wednesday @ 11 AM. We also have our Family Storytime presented on Saturday @ 10:30 where you can enjoy stories and a craft!

**Tickets required upon entry. Pick up your free ticket at the Children's Reference Desk before entering your story time. Tickets will be given to the first 30 children and their caregivers the day of the scheduled event.

Please note that in order to provide time for staff to prepare for school year programs, we will be taking a short break from our regular programs and storytimes. We'll be back September 5th with lots of fun storytimes and activities!

Community Craft – Plastic Bag Weaving August 18th @ 4-5 PM [8+]

 

In every pantry across the USA, there can be found a knot of plastic bags just taking up space.

What can we do about these bags?

Recycle! Learn some basic weaving techniques on August 18th as we turn what could be considered trash into an upcycled item.

Weave your way to the Library Community Room from 4-5 PM at the Parker Williams Branch Library.
