Teen Book Buddies Needed!

Book Buddies Logo

Are you in 7th – 12th grades? Do you want to be a mentor? Do you need service hours? Then volunteer to be a Big Buddy!

Harris County Public Library's Book Buddies program pairs trained teen volunteers (Big Buddies) with children in Kindergarten through 3rd grades (Little Buddies).
For 10 weeks, the Buddies meet once a week for 45 minutes of shared reading.

This next session will run from February to April 2019 at Kingwood Library.
You will meet once a week on Tuesdays from 4:30 PM to 5:15 PM to read with your Little Buddy.

If interested, stop by Kingwood Library to pick up an application to be a Big Buddy!

Join a Book Club!

It is a great time to join one of our book clubs at the Evelyn Meador Library. Now, as I say that, I know what you are thinking. It’s a bit of a busy season. There are presents to wrap, kids to entertain, and relatives to write, and the list goes on. However, after Christmas, things are going to calm down, and you are going to need to find something to do to fill up your time, and a great way to do that is to join one of our book clubs.

Make the Holidays Easier with Ebooks!

Now that that December is really here, life is getting more and more difficult. People are travelling, which leads to cranky road trips, stores and roads get crowded with all the holiday shoppers, and it just seems like you have less and less time to get everything done. All those things combined means that it gets harder and harder to get to the library and get the books that you need to keep your sanity. Fortunately, your HCPL website is here to help, offering electronic books and audiobooks that you can download, read or listen to, and return, without any need to go to the library! That’s right! You can have books for road trips, audiobooks for traffic, and you get this with just a click of a button, no need to go outside! What’s more, we have plenty of sites to choose from.

Santa Claus is Coming to.... the Library!

This Tuesday, we have a very special visitor coming to the Evelyn Meador Library. Since it's December (and you read the title of this blog), you can probably guess who it is. That's right, Santa is coming! We are going to be having a special storytime starting 6:00 PM, on December 4.

During Santa's visit, he will be singing songs and reading a story to the kids. After this, there will be lemonade and cookies, as well as a chance to take some pictures. We expect that this will be a crowded program, and everyone who comes might not be able to attend, so please come early so that you can enjoy this special visit.

Hope to see you soon and have a great Christmas season!

Holiday Party!

Come join us as we celebrate the holidays with festive music from our local schools, a craft activity, and a visit from the man of the season, Santa Claus.

If you have any questions, please call us at 832-927-7800.

Celebrate Holidays with the Library

Now that November has come around, we are all preparing for Thanksgiving, that big holiday at the end of the month. However, there are a lot of other holidays this month that just get overlooked in our turkey preparation. Yeah, Thanksgiving is fun, but should it so blatantly overshadow Have a Party with Your Bear Day (Yeah, look it up. It’s worth a Google)? Or what about the equally important National Fast Food Day? Should that be passed over for a holiday that we just go and eat food? We agree with you that it should absolutely not! So, to help correct this egregious oversight, we at the library are happy to provide some books to help you properly celebrate some of these other holidays (as well as letting you know when these are). You’re welcome.

Succeed in School with Monday Mentoring!

Have you ever felt like this picture while doing homework? If so, we have good news for you. The Evelyn Meador Library is committed to working with our local community to help students succeed in school. As such, we are happy to announce the beginning of a new program at the library: Monday Mentoring.

Written in the Stars: READ!

Welcome to the beginning of our National Teen Reads Week! This is an annual celebration of our teen literature, and a time where we encourage our teens to read more (as opposed to our normal agenda, which is to discourage reading and hide books. We are a library after all.). However, if you aren’t a teen, don’t let that discourage you from celebrating this week. Everyone can come to the library and do something to participate in this amazing event. Here are some of our suggestions on how to reach for the stars at the library this week:
