Read Across America – Cat in the Hat Celebration March 2nd @ 5PM [3+]

Read Across America is the nationally recognized literary holiday that celebrates Dr. Seuss' birthday and encourages kids of all ages to pick up a book and read.

This year, we will be celebrating Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat.
 

Come join us on March 2nd in the Library Community Room at 5 PM for a reading of the book, a Cat in the Hat craft, and a sweet treat.

Love to write short stories?

The Texas Association of Authors is hosting it's 3rd Annual Texas Short Story Writing Contest.  If you fancy yourself a writer, this is a great chance to submit your work for prizes and possible publication in a short story collection.
 
The contest is open from March 1, 2017 to July 31, 2017.   The author must live in Texas and the story must be between 1500-3000 words in length.  If you think you have what it takes, please go to the Texas Shorts website for more information.

With the partnership of the Children’s Library at Lone Star College-CyFair,
pre-service teachers in EDUC 1301 will read and lead engaging literacy
activities that will incorporate science, technology, engineering and math
(STEM) concepts.

Texas Bluebonnet Award Voting January 25th @ 3-6 PM [3+]

The Parker Williams Branch Library will be hosting voting for the Texas Bluebonnet Award.

If your child or teen is homeschooled or goes to a school that does not participate in Texas Bluebonnet Award voting, you can pick up a ballot from the Reference Desk from 3 PM to 6 PM on January 25th at the Parker Williams Branch Library.

Make one of your new year's resolutions to give back a little to your community; become one of Harris County Public Library's indispensable volunteers tutors!

You choose when, where and what you want to teach. We supply all the training, materials and space. No previous teaching experience necessary. All you need is a few hours per week and a desire to help your neighbors.

Thanks to a Grant from Better World Books, a Library Comes to Life in the Fifth Ward's Finnigan Park

Thanks to a literacy grant from Better World Books, Harris County Public Library was able to partner with Harris County Precinct 1's Finnigan Park to build a Living Library at their Youth Education Tower (YET) Center. Located in the 5th Ward, Finnigan Park’s YET Center serves as a safe, after-school space for elementary and middle school students from three neighborhood schools.

Make a Big Difference in a Child's Life. Be a Book Buddy.

Do you enjoy working with children? Do you want to make a difference in a child's life? Then volunteer for HCPL's Book Buddies!

Book Buddies is a free program that brings children and volunteers (adults or teens) together to share the joy of reading. It pairs trained volunteers (Big Buddies) with children in Kindergarten through 3rd grades (Little Buddies). For 12 weeks, the Buddies meet once a week for 45 minutes of shared reading.

GED & ESL Distance Learning Programs @ HCPL

Harris County Public Library is partnering with Harris County Department of Education, Adult Education to present free distance learning programs for area residents who want to learn English or pursue their GED. English as a Second Language registration and orientation will be held at Parker Williams Branch Library and GED registration and orientation at North Channel Branch Library.

Distance education programs allow you to learn at your own pace and to work on any computer with an internet connection.
