Summer Reading is Coming!

Our Summer Reading Program is coming up in a few weeks. During the Summer, every book you read or activity you participate in earns you points that you can later use to win a prize!* We also have tons of activities that you and your family are encouraged to attend (some activities require registration or tickets). Free Lunch For Children Ages 1-18

Starting Tuesday, June 6, 2017 from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays the South Houston Branch Library will be serving FREE Lunch to children ages 1-18 years of age.  Meals will be provided by the Houston Food Bank Summer Food Service Program. Visit with Rice University's Global Health Fellows

Rice University’s Rice360 Institute for Global Health brings together students and faculty from a variety of disciplines to design and deploy new technologies to solve health challenges around the world. This year, the institute is a semi-finalist for a $100 million MacArthur Foundation grant for neonatal technologies they designed for mothers and newborns in Malawi, where they will return again this summer. Talk with the institute’s Global Health Fellows about their experiences on Monday, June 6 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Library Community Room (register please by calling 281-484-2036 or by clicking on our events calendar).

Summer Reading Program Calendars

Our calendar of events for the 2017 Summer Reading Program is ready!!!! So stop by the Library and pick up one (or more) to keep your family in the know about this jam-packed summer. Share the extras with your neighbors. It all begins Tuesday, June 5.

Summer Volunteer Opportunities

Summer is coming up quickly and the Barbara Bush Library is in need of volunteers to help during the summer. We are in need of volunteers to help us shelve during various days and times throughout the week. 

Volunteers must be at least 15 years of age or older and able to commit to at least 2 hours of service a week. Training is made available for all new volunteers.

You can also download an application by going to HCPL's Volunteer Page. Once you complete the application, drop it off at the Barbara Bush Library and we will contact you regarding volunteering! 

Summer Volunteer Orientation May 19th @ 5 PM [12+]

It’s time for teens, twelve and up, to get those summer plans started.

On May 19th in the Library Community Room at 5PM, we are going to be having our Summer Volunteer Orientation. All those who want to fulfill volunteer hours for National Honors Society or Junior National Honors Society, school requirements, or just for something fun and different to do.

Traveling Naturalist

Do you know what animals are prey and what animals are predators in the area where you live? Would you like to find out? Then come join us at the Alvin D. Baggette Community Center Thursday, July 28th at 3 pm, for our Amazing Animals program. A Traveling Naturalist with the Challenger Seven Learning Center will be bringing live animals and talking about these incredible animal. This is a ticketed event, so please pick up your free ticket at the circulation desk in the library starting on Monday, July 25th. You must have your ticket present to attend this program. One ticket per child while tickets last.   

Gold Medal Readers
