Downloading the OverDrive App to your Android Device

The OverDrive App is now available for Android products!  You can download it free of charge through Google Play, the new Android Marketplace, on your smartphone or tablet.

An exception to this rule is with the Kindle Fire.  The App Store on the Fire is run through the Amazon marketplace, which is a subset of the Android marketplace that, unfortunately, does not at present carry the OverDrive App.  However, there is a fairly simple way around this.

Amazon's default settings of the Kindle Fire make it so that you cannot download third-party (i.e. non-Amazon) apps.  To their credit, they make it fairly easy to turn this setting off.  The first...

The Digital Media Catalog

Digital MediaThere used to be a large box near the top center of our home page that said “Digital Media Catalog.”  You used to click that box to get to our ebooks and downloadable audio.  Then “they” redesigned the web page.  Fear not; it’s still easy to get there.  You just click this icon now.  It’s on the right, about 2½” down.

New Titles Were Recently Added!

Hello my fellow users of the HCPL Digital Media Catalog!  I am happy to inform you that we had a nice addition to the digital catalog last night!  There were over 400 eBooks added, over 100 eAudio added and a few videos as well as one or two music titles.

Because there is a limit of 200 titles in the new eBooks area, not all titles will appear there.  Here is how to easily find all the titles that were added on January 26th, 2012.  This is really only important for our eBook users.  The new eAudio titles will all show in the "new eAudo" section on the homepage.

THE IPAD DIGITAL DEVICE SESSION

This Saturday, January 28th, we will be hosting our final "Get to Know Your Digital Device" session of the month.  This session will concentrate on using the Overdrive App to check eBooks and eAudiobooks out from our Digital Media Catalog onto an iPad.  We will have iPads on hand, but feel free to bring your iPad or iPhone with you and follow along as we go.

The iPad Session starts at 3pm and will be held in the meeting room.  But get here early.  Seating is limited, and the turnout for the first two sessions has...

Recent Additions to the HCPL Digital Media Blog

Hopefully you have been enjoying the semi-weekly updates to the Digital Media Catalog eBooks section.

I have been able to create eBook orders on a weekly basis as opposed to the monthly basis as is normal.  Three of the four I have ordered are actually live on the site.  The fourth one was unexpectedly delayed after I ordered it but I am hopeful it should be live soon.

There were not enough good titles added to our vendor's catalog to order last week so I am combining last week’s picks with this week’s to order another list of titles.  Because of donations from some of our branch’s friends of the library groups, this trend of ordering eBooks on a weekly basis should continue through at least January.
