Jean Simmons (1929-2010)

The wonderful Jean Simmons died last week at the age of 80. I’ve always enjoyed her in the movies and on TV series.

Happy Birthday Frank Miller!

Today is author and illustrator Frank Miller's birthday! Many of you may recognize his stylized work in major motion films such as 300 or Sin City. He is most famous for his dark illustrations and his contributions to the Batman canon.

Here are a few facts by the multi-talented artist:

"To Infinity and Beyond!"

Lately, I have been hearing about the awesome special effects used in the theater released movie "Avatar". It seems like every day someone new is raving about it and though I have not see it yet myself I began to think of all the times a movie has captured our attention with some new state-of-the-art special effects. So let’s take a journey back in time to movies that amazed us.

Comfort Movies and TV Shows

There are some movies that we turn to when we just need to visit old friends or places. I call these “comfort movies.” We don’t necessarily have to be sad or lonely or feel under the weather. They’re just movies that strike a chord within us and make us feel good. The equivalent of comfort food like meat loaf and mashed potatoes or macaroni’n’cheese or tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich.

Long Live the Queen!

On New Year’s Day, I went to the theater and saw a wonderful movie – The Young Victoria. Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada, Sunshine Cleaning) plays Queen Victoria in the early years of her reign.

Read the Movie: The Lovely Bones

The Lovely Bones cover artPeter Jackson's new film opens in theatres next Friday, January 15. I have been eagerly anticipating this film for quite a while. I read The Lovely Bones, the bestselling novel by Alice Sebold, a few years ago when a coworker suggested it and was blown away. The story is centered around a young murder victim, Susie Salmon ("Like the fish."), who tells her family's sad but hopeful story from a heaven of her own design.

A Sweet Treat

baked gingerbreadThis past weekend, I was recruited to bake for an annual bake sale. While I like to bake a few dozen cookies here and there, I discovered as the big day got closer that I was going to need a little extra motivation to become a super baker.

Brittany Murphy (1977-2009)

It was a shock to read that Brittany Murphy died on Sunday. Like most people, I remember her best in Clueless, where she stole scenes from star Alicia Silverstone. But I heard her more than I saw her in movies. She was the voice of Luanne Platter, niece of Hank and Peggy Hill, on King of the Hill.

Jennifer Jones (1919-2009)

Jennifer Jones passed away this week at the age of 90.

The Reason for the Season

As much as I enjoy Christmas comedies and movies about Santa Claus, I also love films that remind us of the beginning of the holiday. Below I’ve listed movies that remember the reason for the season. Many of these are on my must-see holiday list.
