Book Hunters #97: Teen Horror!

One of the odder things about us humans is that many of us really, really like to be scared out of our wits--not everyone by a long shot, but enough of us to make scaring the bejeezus out of people a billion dollar business.

This week, Book Hunters get in on the act and offer some frighteningly good reads for young adults.

Book Hunters in Brief #95: Get Away @ Your Library

Teen Read Read: October 18 - 24

The Teen Read Week theme this year is "Get Away @ Your Library" which speaks to both the idea that the public library can be the best kind of refuge from the stuff all of us, but especially young adults, have to deal on a daily basis. It also gets at the idea that reading, almost by definition, opens up the world to the reader--reading can be a road map for your life.

The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly

Minnow Bly has learned some hard lessons in the short seventeen years that make up her life. She’s learned that parts of you that you take for granted can be taken away, your family can betray you in the blink of an eye, and she’s learned that the power of belief can be the most dangerous thing of all.

The Merciless

Four girls in the basement of an abandoned house, another bound and gagged on the dirty concrete floor. It’s okay, though. She’s going to be just fine, the other girls are here to help her. They’re here to perform the exorcism she so desperately needs. They’ve got all the tools they require: bell, book, candle… knife.

Book Hunters in Brief #91: Talk Like a Pirate Day!

As day jobs go, we suppose you could do worse than sailing the bounding main with an eye peeled for booty-laden schooners. If only it had a better dental plan and less of that whole walking the plank thing...

Be that as it may, tomorrow is Talk Like a Pirate Day and Book Hunters have dug up some treasures for the whole family.

Book Hunters in Brief #88: Bookworms

As you might guess, the love of books and reading is what drives many librarians to do what they do (well...that and dreams of unimaginable wealth and power). This week, Book Hunters in Brief salutes the mighty bookworm in celebration of National Literacy Month. Here are some great books about readers and reading:

Summer Jobs

Summer is the perfect time to earn some extra cash, whether it's  the job of your dreams or a daily slog.
If you're working hard for your money or working hard for no money, a.k.a. the Summer Internship,
you'll find some solidarity with these summer job reads. Have the summer off? Get all of the experience with
none of the work!

The Demonata

The Demonata is a series written by popular YA author Darren Shan. The series ended with the publication of Hell’s Heroes in 2009, but for fans of horror who aren’t familiar with Darren Shan, he is a gift and this series is a great popcorn (quick and easy) read.

Shutter

Shutter is the debut novel of author Courtney Alameda. If you ever played the cult video game hit Fatal Frame then this is the book you didn’t know that you were waiting for.

Book Hunters in Brief #77: Paper Towns

This week Book Hunters in Brief salutes a man with an eminently forgettable name and an uncanny ability to remember what it was like to be a young person in this big old world, John Green.
