Free Family Vacation

lion danceI picture a tropical island or bustling oriental town. It  looks like there is some kind of event being planned.   Everyone is excited, anticipating the start of the festivities.  The children can't wait to make a Chinese yo-yo, origami doll or flower lei. Every mouth is watering at the smell of all the different foods being prepared for the event. People have gathered from many Asian countries and Pacific islands to share their culture through cooking and calligraphy demonstrations, crafts, and even a Vietnamese Lion Dance! There is lots of music, laughter, and fun. The whole family is having a great time.  Wait!

What Are You Doing This Summer?

Don't be bored this summer, volunteer at the library.  Teens entering the seventh grade or older are invited to join us at the library this summer.  Starting tomorrow, May 1, we will begin taking volunteer applications for summer volunteers.  You must be able to commit to working at least 4 out of the 5 weeks in a session.  You must also be able to attend one of the mandatory orientations for the session of your choice.

Session one runs from June 6 through July 10 with the orientations on May 31 at 4 PM or June 4 at 7 PM.  Session two runs from July 11 through August 14 with the orientation on July 8 at 10 AM.  Additional opportunities include patron count week and a mini-session that runs August 12 through August 24.  You need to have volunteered during one of the long sessions to volunteer during the previous sessions to volunteer during mini-session.

Applications will be accepted through May 18 so hurry in for yours.

"Smart" App for "Smart" phone

Did you know that Harris County Public Library has a new App, free at iTunes and the Android Market? It allows you to do most of what you can do on our HCPL web site, like renew, place requests, access the events calendar, and pay your fines. It’s amazing. I was at home when my daughter texted me and asked me to check at the library for a book for her. I already had the phone in my hand so I went to the HCPL Mobile App and looked the book up in the catalog, placed a request on it for her, and then picked it up at the library in just two days. Now that’s service… and smart! Check out the new app... you'll be glad you did!
