Last week to enter the Tournament of Books 4th-6th graders

BooksHarris County Public Library Tournament of Books includes 4 library branches, 7 books your team reads over 6 weeks and will have 1 winning team.  It is for kids going into 4th-6th grade this fall.  Register at the library as a team or as an individual no later than June 27th.  Northwest Branch will have up to 5 teams and 4-5 kids make up a team.  We will meet Tuesdays at 2:00 pm starting June 20th to read, play book games and make book ralated crafts to prepare for the semi-finals Tuesday, August 1st at 2:00pm. The winning team of the semi-finals will go on to the finals at our Administrative Offices downtown on Saturday, August 5th at 10:30 am. The Grand prize winners will receive a $25 gift card and some fun swag and books. Call or come in if you have questions.

Saturday Bugs on Wheels

Houston Museum of Natural ScienceSaturday, June 24th at 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm come and meet amazing arthropods presented by Houston Museum of Natural Science and Cockrell Butterfly Center Bugs on Wheels.  See live giant millipedes, docile hissing cockroaches, stunning walking sticks and much more will amaze children in this hands-on, interactive presentation.

For children ages 5-11, this presentation gives the audience a chance to meet some of the most unusual members of the insect world, while learning about their native habitats and unique adaptations for survival.

Giant millipedes, hissing cockroaches, amazingly camouflaged walking sticks, furry tarantulas and more will fascinate children as they learn all about the incredible world of arthropods.

Airplane Adventure

Paper AirplanesFriday, June 23rd at 2:00pm join us for an airplane adventure.  Come and learn how to make two different paper airplanes, decorate and improve the design then take them through different challenges for prizes. This adventure will start in the meeting room where we will learn to fold the airplanes and make modifications. Then we will head outside to the front of the library to see how they do with a distance challenge and accuracy challenges.  This program is for children ages 5-11 and limited to 40.  Come 30 minutes before the program to get a free ticket at the desk.

What is ReadyRosie?

ReadyRosie is an early education tool that is currently helping schools and communities across the nation deepen and scale their parent engagement efforts by leveraging the power of video modeling and mobile technology to meet and equip parents where they are. ReadyRosie has hundreds of brief videos in English and Spanish that model everyday interactions in familiar environments with real parents.

All it takes is 2 minutes a day.

Babies Love Books

It is time to get your baby off to a great start this summer at the library.  Sign them up for their first summer reading program to earn a free board book and certificate. We will have special guests Little Gym and Gymboree Play and Music this summer. We have a Baby Giggles class for children birth to 11 months, Babiesgeared for babies not yet walking. It meets every Wednesday at 1:00 pm for 45 minutes.

PRACTICE SAT/ACT

Take the SAT or ACT before you take it! The Princeton Review is offering a practice exam at the library. Exams will be graded and scores released at a later time. The SAT will be held June 17 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, and the ACT held July 15 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Saturday Dinosaurs Rock

Dinosaurs RockSaturday, June 10th at 2:00 pm we will have Dinosaurs Rock.  Do you love dinosuars?  Come to the library and learn about incredible, museum quality fossils and minerals that you can actually see up close and touch. Each child will get a geode to break and take home.  This program is for ages 5-11 and is limited to the first 40.  Get a ticket 30 minutes early at the desk. Also, remember to sign up for the summer reading program and earn great prizes!

Commit for Life Blood Drive at Northwest Branch Library
