Teen DIY and a Movie – The DUFF (PG-13) and Anti-Valentines [13+] - Friday, February 9 at 4 PM

Valentine’s Day is for old people and losers, right?

What better way to spread your distain then giving out some Anti-Valentines.

Make some Anti-Valentine’s with us on February 9th at 4 PM in the Library Community Room as we watch The DUFF and observe the destruction of the typical high school social structure.   

Find plants that are Texas Superstars

Learn about Texas A&M AgriLife’s Texas Superstar Plants program, which provides information about a variety of plants you can grow in Texas, from annuals and perennials to vegetables and fruit trees. Paul Winski, County Extension Agent in the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension program, will help you learn more about this resource and answer other questions about gardening in our area on Saturday, February 10 at 10:30 a.m. The Texas Superstar Plants program selects plants that have been proven to grow well here and are considered attractive for various reasons (such as ornamental value or providing fruit) by horticulturists and consumers.

Community Craft – Mardi Gras Masks [All Ages] - Thursday, February 8 at 4 PM



To get you ready for Mardi Gras on February 13, we are throwing our own Fat Thursday celebration.

Join us on February 8th at 4 PM in the library community room to make your own Mardi Gras mask to be ready for the big day.

Learn about a new Great Decisions discussion group

Learn about a new Great Decisions discussions series here at the Parker Williams branch. We will meet eight times this year (once per month with a few breaks) to discuss the most critical global issues facing America today. Visit for an overview of how discussions work and pick up a briefing book developed by the Foreign Policy Association on Wednesday, January 31, at 6:30 p.m. The first discussion will be in February. Magic: The Gathering Gameplay [8+] - Monday, February 5 from 6-7:30 PM

Magic: The Gathering is a dueling card game from Wizards of the Coast.

It incorporates strategy, mythical lore, and competitive-community play.

Join us on February 5th on the Library Floor for a few hours of game play from 6-7:30 PM.

For those who would like to learn how to play, a staff member will be present to teach you.

STEM Time – The Plant Doctor [7+] - Wednesday, February 7 at 5 PM

George Washington Carver, also known as The Plant Doctor, was an African American botanist and inventor with an affinity for peanuts.

Join us on February 7th at 5 PM in the Library Community Room as we present a spotlight on the life, achievements, and accomplishments of George Washington Carver.

After the presentation, we will make some homemade peanut butter.

For those with a peanut allergy, please make arrangements with the librarian ahead of the program for any accommodations. 

Word Basics [8+] - Wednesday, January 31 at 5 PM



Microsoft Word is one of the most used programs in the world.

It is a word processing application that can do a lot of simple or crazy things.

Join Mr. John in the Computer Lab on January 31st at 5 PM for a basic introduction into the world of Word.

Movie and Markers - Thursday, February 1 at 4 PM – The Princess and the Frog (G) 98 min. [3+]

“A waitress, desperate to fulfill her dreams as a restaurant owner, is set on a journey to turn a frog prince back into a human being, but she has to face the same problem after she kisses him.” –

Join us on February 1st starting at 4 PM in the Library Community Room to watch The Princess and the Frog based on the combination of an updated fairytale and Southern African-American folklore.

To go along with the movie, coloring sheets and markers will be provided during the movie.

Movie popcorn has been generously provided by the Friends of the Parker Williams Library. 

Coffee and Quilting Group Starts Next Week

Join us for coffee and to make your own handmade quilt just like the one Lucy, the group leader, made here. We meet next Tuesday, January 30, at 10:15 a.m. and then the last Tuesday of every month following. The library (thanks to our Friends) provides all materials.

Book Buddies: Big Buddy Training [14+] - Tuesday, January 30 at 4:30 PM

Book Buddies is a youth literacy program brought to you from the Harris County Public Library.

Book Buddies is for children from Kindergarten to third grade and will be held at the Parker Williams Branch Library starting on Tuesdays at 5:00 to 5:45 PM for ten consecutive weeks starting February 6th and ending April 10th.

We are looking for teen volunteers to be mentor Big Buddies.

Applications will be available at the Reference Desk and will be due the day of the training.

Training will be on January 30th at 4:30 in the Parker Williams Library Community Room.
