Hispanic Heritage Month Craft: Mini Piñata

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the South Houston Branch Library invites you to join us for several fun programs. This Thursday, September 20, kids ages 8 to 13 will have the opportunity to create their own “Mini Piñata” and fill it with candy. Join us for this fun activity at 4:30 pm. All materials will be provided by the Friends of the Library.

Free Computer Classes

The South Houston Branch Library offers free computer classes for adults every week. Tuesdays at 10:30 am we have computer classes in English, and the class subjects repeat on Thursdays at 10:30 am in Spanish. Classes are free and no registration is required. Take a look at our online event calendar to view our upcoming classes.

Internet Basics

Are you interested in learning how to use the Internet? Join us at our next free computer class Tuesday, September 11 at 10:30 am, and learn how to visit websites, perform searches, and change your Internet settings. We will visit popular websites for news, information, directions, job searches and more. No registration is required.

Learning Express Library

Did you know that Harris County Public Library provides free access to the Learning Express Library database? This database has GED practice tests available in the areas of Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science, and Social Studies, and includes a GED en Español section as well. Adults are invited to join us this Saturday, September 8 @ 1:30 PM to learn how to access this valuable resource with a library card.

Computer Class: Mouse and Keyboard

If you would like to learn how to use the mouse and keyboard on your computer, join us at our next computer class Tuesday August 28 at 10:30 am. We will practice using the left and right mouse click, highlighting, dragging, and the different keyboard keys. We will also work on our typing skills using a practice website that is free for all user levels. Classes are free and no registration is required.

E-Mail Basics Computer Class

Perhaps you have an e-mail account but haven't used it in some time, or maybe you have never had an e-mail account before but would like to begin to receive mail electronically. If you are interested in getting an e-mail account and becoming familiarized with how to use your account to keep in touch with family members and friends, we invite you to our free E-Mail Basics computer class next Monday, August 20 @ 5:30 pm. No registration is required, and you don't have to have an existing e-mail to participate.

Flipster Digital Magazines

If you're looking for a new hobby or ideas for current hobbies, make sure to check out our Flipster magazine database. Flipster is free with your Harris County Public Library card and provides free access to digital magazines such as Crochet World, Astronomy, and Taste of Home. 

Take a look at the many magazines available. You're sure to find new recipes, craft ideas, and fun reading material to browse. 

And don't forget to check out the many databases available for free with your library card.

Creating a Resume

Do you need help creating a resume to use during your job search? Adults are invited to our free Resume Class on Monday, August 6 at 5:30 PM where participants will be able to create a basic resume. Please bring previous job employment dates, names, as well as job duties and descriptions which will be used to create a new resume or update your existing resume. It is recommended to bring your e-mail information or a USB drive to e-mail or save your resume.

E-Summer Reading for Kids and Teens

Are your kids and teens searching for titles to read for school, or for recommended reading for their grade levels? Our e-book service through OverDrive and Libby has e-books and e-audiobooks for kids and teens that are categorized by grade level and include books on lists such as the Bluebonnet, Lone Star and the Tayshas.

If your kids are searching for something to read, check out our e-books at https://hcpl.overdrive.com/ and select Collections>Kids or Collections>Teens. You can also download the OverDrive or Libby app and log in with your Harris County Public Library card to check out e-materials.

Do you want to learn how to create a flyer or business cards? The South Houston Branch Library will be having a Microsoft Publisher Basics class next Tuesday, July 31 @ 10:30 AM. Adults are invited to join us to learn how to use Microsoft Publisher and to create items such as flyers, invitations, and more. Computer classes are free and no registration is required.
