Conversational English Class Starting Soon!

The South Houston Public Library will start offering an English Conversational Class on Monday, March 12, 2018.  Classes will be every Monday from 6:30 pm to 8 pmClasses are completely free but registration is required.  To register visit the South Houston Branch or call us at 832-927-5530.

Easter Egg Wreath

Adults are invited to join us in creating a beautiful wreath that is sure to brighten up any door or wall. Join us this upcoming Monday, March 5, at 1:30 PM and use colorful Easter Eggs, grass, ribbon, and other Spring materials to create your very own Easter Egg Wreath. We will have fun using our creativity, and best of all, this wreath can be saved for future use! All materials will be provided by the library.

Celebrate Read Across America Day with The Cat in the Hat and the Arandas' Mascot "Goat"

Read Across America is an annual celebration created by the National Education Association and promotes the excitement of reading and books to children and teens everywhere. Here at the South Houston Branch Library we invite you to celebrate Read Across America Day during our celebration next Thursday, March 1 at 4:30 PM. Children will have the opportunity to enjoy a cake sponsored by Arandas Bakery, prepare their own Dr. Seuss snacks, and participate in fun games. "The Cat in the Hat" and the Arandas mascot "The Goat" will be present and available to take pictures with children. We invite you to come and celebrate the magic of reading with us.

Adult Movie Mania "IT"

Adults ages 17 and up are invited to join us for this month's Adult Movie Mania movie: IT, the 2017 film adaptation based on Stephen King's 1986 novel of the same name. In a small town in 1989 Maine, seven bullied kids discover that a malevolent force is preying on the local children. Soon, they band together to destroy the monster, a killer clown called Pennywise, in this nerve-shredding horror film. Make sure to stop by the library this Friday, February 23 at 1:30 PM to view this suspenseful film.

African American History Month Celebration

February is African American History Month, and we invite you to celebrate the importance of African American culture and history with us. The South Houston Branch Library will be having an African American History Month Celebration on Monday, February 19 at 5:00 pm. All ages are welcome to join us for fun and activities during this celebration.

Winter Olympics Curling Game

The Winter Olympic Games are upon us, and to celebrate we will be having a fun game of Curling on Thursday February 15 @ 4:30 PM. Curling is a game in which members of a team try to control the direction and speed of a round flat stone by sweeping the surface of the ice in the stone's path. Kids ages 6-12 are invited to play our own non-ice modified version of this game and will receive an Olympic Games Diploma.

Arm Yourself with a Flu Shot!

It is still not too late to get your flu shot!  We are experiencing a very severe flu season so do not put it off any longer!  The South Houston Branch Library in partnership with our local Walgreen's Pharmacy wil be offering flu shots on Monday, February 12, 2018 from 1pm-3pm.  Shots will be administered to people ages 12 and up only.  Please bring your health insurance card.  Quantities are limited.  For more information please call the branch at 832-927-5530.

Mardi Gras at the Library

Join us next Thursday, February 8 at 4:30 PM at the South Houston Branch Library for a fun Mardi Gras Carnival celebration! All ages are invited to come and enjoy wonderful masks, necklaces and more, so make sure to bring the whole family!

If you would like to learn more about Mardi Gras and perhaps make your own crafts, check out some of the great nonfiction books available at the library.  We even have Mardi Gras music CDs

Starting in February, several programs at the South Houston Branch Library will have new times:

Baby Time - Tuesdays at 1:15 PM
Story Time - Tuesdays at 4:30 PM
Walk Away the Pounds/Pierda Libras Caminando - Tuesdays at 10:15 AM 
Computer Classes in English - Tuesdays at 10:30 AM
Computer Classes in Spanish - Thursdays at 10:30 AM

Curiosity Cruiser visits South Houston Branch

The Curiosity Cruiser will make a special stop at the South Houston Branch Library next Thursday, January 18 at 4:30 PM. The Curiosity Cruiser is Harris County Public Library's state-of-the-art mobile library and provides children with access to books and exciting educational programs. The Curiosity Cruiser will also bring a special NASA STEM program, so make sure to stop by the library next Thursday and see all that this wonderful mobile library has to offer!
