Choo Choo Club Early Literacy Program!

Choo Choo Club Early Literacy Program is in it's 9th year at the Library!  This popular children's program meets on Thursdays at 1:30 pm from September through May and is for children ages 3-5 (and their parents). Early literacy is everything children know about reading before they can actually read.  The program is designed to help your child learn all of the necessary pre-reading skills.

There are 7 early literacy skills:

  • Reading Readiness - learning to use books
  • Print Awareness - understanding that words on a page have meaning
  • Vocabulary - knowing the names of things
  • Phonological Awareness - hearing the smaller sounds that make up words (songs and nursery rhymes are a wonderful example of this skill)
  • Narrative Skills - understanding that stories have a beginning, middle and end, being able to "re-tell" a story
  • Letter Knowledge - learning the name of each letter and it's sound
  • Print Motivation - an interest and enjoyment in books!

Each week, the focus is on 1 letter of the alphabet with all activities related to that letter and 1 or more of the above mentioned skills.  The children will learn correct pronunciation, practice writing the letter, complete art projects, hands on literacy activities and STEM activities.  Children will learn by "doing" in a fun, creative environment at their own pace with you, their parent, guiding them.  After all, you are your childs first teacher!  If you would like to have your child join us, please call 832-559-4235 to hold your spot!
