So Many Displays!

This month, the library has many displays for you to enjoy!  You can't miss the beautiful, eye catching African American Heritage Month display on the round wall.  We think you'll agree that words really do have power as you enjoy quotes from influential African American's, and books on the arts, sports and history.  The Winter Olympics are coming!  Enjoy books, trivia and facts about the Olympics on the pyramid closest to the Children's area.  Once the games get underway, we'll  post a daily tally of all the medals won by our USA athletes! The new Bluebonnet award books are out.  You'll find them on the Texas flag themed pyramid display at the entrance to the Children's area.  Saturday, February 3rd is Take your Child to the Library Day. The first pyramid at the entrance to the library is dedicated to this special day.  And, we certainly haven't forgotten the big event of the month - Valentines day!  We hope you enjoy Library Lovers Month by selecting a book from our Valentines book pyramid.  You can also leave words of love on the large pole near the circulation desk.  Near the entrance to the Children's Area, you can choose some photo props and take and post pictures to FB, Twitter and Instagram.  Don't forget to use the hashtag "ilovemylibrary" or "tomballlibrary".  And, last but not least, the Friends of the Tomball Library are having a "romance" book sale all month long. Each bag of books is $2 and all proceeds go directly to library programming and events!  So many reasons to love your Library all month long!

STEM based learning at Choo Choo Club!

No doubt you’ve heard about the importance of STEM based learning for children.  STEM focuses on 4 disciplines: science, technology, engineering and mathematics. These are all areas of learning that kids need to be comfortable with to excel in the future.  Exposing children at a young age to simple STEM concepts and activities sets the foundation for later higher learning.  At Choo Choo Club, the Library’s early literacy program for 3 - 5 year olds, children will participate in STEM based learning each week in addition to the weekly focus on 1 letter of the alphabet and literacy activities related to that letter.  Using specially designed kits children (with help from their parents) will complete scaled down, age appropriate lessons to introduce them to each of the 4 disciplines.  This past Thursday, the children completed activities using the balance scale.  They predicted which of 2 items would weigh the most and then placed them on the scale to see if they were correct.  They also used weights to balance objects and filled in a graph based on the color of the weight and amount they used.  Each activity concluded with answering some basic questions, such as:  which object was the heaviest?  or, which object did you have to use the most weights for? Choo Choo Club meets every Thursday at 1:30 pm.  Required registration begins 1 week in advance of each session by calling 832-559-4235.
