Black History Month at the Oscars

February has brought us two special events: Black History Month and the Academy Awards presentation.  So I think we should call attention to the Black actors and actresses who have paved the way for the next generation of talent – such as young Quvenzhané Wallis.  Past winner Denzel Washington is nominated again this year.  And, of course, he was preceded by others.

Therefore, let’s take a moment to acknowledge the talented Black artists who have won the Oscar.  Check out their array of movies, including those for which they received their awards.

Best Picture -- Now and Then

I’m at a disadvantage when it comes to this year’s Oscars.  I’ve seen very few of the nominated films.  Friends and family have told me about some of the movies, and I’ve looked up information on my own.  The nine films up for Best Picture are quite diverse, ranging from historical to fantasy to military to musical to western.

Now I will admit up front that I’m cheating a little on this blog.  I looked up the plots for most of the films.  And as I read, I couldn’t help being reminded of past Best Picture winners.

The Oldest and the Youngest

This year’s Academy Award nominations held a pleasant surprise and new record.  In the Best Actress in a Leading Role category, we have both the oldest and the youngest nominees in the history of the Oscars.  Emmanuelle Riva, nominated for the foreign film Amour, was 85 years old when announcements were made last week.  At the other end of the spectrum is

2013 Oscar Nominations

This morning, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominations for the 85th Academy Awards. Honoring achievements in film, the Oscars are highly anticipated by Hollywood and movie goers alike. The most prestigious of the movie awards, it is always exciting to see how the nominations stack up. This year’s nominees are a mix of the expected and the unexpected, with some heavy hitters and fan favorites passed over for relative unknowns. There are also a number of names familiar to annual watchers of the Academy Awards. It will be interesting to see how the newcomers do against seasoned veterans.

So far this awards season, I have only seen one of the nominated films. Most of these films are still in theaters, but if you’re like me and don’t have time to visit the movies, browse the HCPL catalog and request other movies featuring these nominated actors and actresses!

And the Oscar Goes To…

hollywoodLike many movie, fashion, and awards show fans, I spent last Sunday evening watching the Oscars. Voted on by the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Oscars are the crowning moment in a hotly contested awards season. Every year, I join a group of friends, fill out my ballot, cross my fingers and hope my favorites win. There is oohing and aahing over the dapper men and elegant women on the red carpet (and the inevitable gasps of horror when someone makes a fashion misstep), cheering when a favorite wins and frustration when they don’t. Last Sunday was no exception.

Awards season is almost over! In my continuing coverage of the Academy Awards, this week’s post focuses on the actresses nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. So far this awards season, Supporting Actress has been dominated by crowd favorite Octavia Spencer, and Best Actress is shaping up to be a showdown between Viola Davis and the indomitable Meryl Streep. It will be interesting to see who ends up taking home the Oscar!

2012 Oscar Nominations: Best Actor & Best Supporting Actor

HollywoodWith only one significant awards show left before the Academy Awards (the BAFTA Awards, which take place Sunday, February 12th), awards season is coming to a head. In my continuing coverage of the Academy Awards, this week’s post focuses on the actors nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. So far this awards season,  Supporting Actor has been dominated by the seemingly unbeatable Christopher Plummer, and Best Actor is shaping up to be a showdown between crowd favorite George Clooney and newcomer Jean Dujardin. It will be interesting to see who ends up taking home the Oscar!

2012 Academy Award Nominations: Best Picture

hollywoodYesterday morning, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced this year’s Oscar nominations. Arguably the most prestigious of the movie awards (and, certainly, my favorite), I have been looking forward to this announcement for weeks. Unlike previous years, when the nominees were fairly expected, this year’s list includes a number of surprising entries. People and movies who have been nominated for other honors this season were ignored, while people and movies who have been overlooked at every other awards show were included. That certainly makes for an exciting awards show!

So far this year, I’ve only seen three of the movies nominated for Best Picture (The Artist, Hugo & War Horse), but I hope to remedy that over the next month. Despite that, I already have firm opinions on who should win. It will be interesting to see if my favorite movie sweeps its categories, or if the awards will be a hodge-podge of recognition.

The Academy Awards air on Sunday, February 26th at 7:00 pm on ABC. I know I’ll have all my fingers and toes crossed for my favorites!

Which movie do you think will take home the Best Picture Oscar this year? Vote in the poll and stay tuned for posts about the actor and actress nominees!

It has been over a week since the Academy Awards and I was overall happy with the results.  Not all of my choices -- in my yearly competition with friends – won; but the winners in the major categories were talented, deserving people.

And the Oscar Goes To...

Hollywood

Like many movie (or fashion!) buffs, I spent last night watching the Academy Awards. Voted on by the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Oscars are the crowning moment in a hotly contested awards season. Even when all the awards seem like sure bets and the broadcast runs long, there is something so effortlessly romantic about the Oscars.

Every year, I join a group of friends, fill out my ballot, cross my fingers and hope my favorites win. There is oohing and aahing over the dapper men and elegant women on the red carpet (and the inevitable gasps of horror when someone makes a fashion misstep), cheering when my favorite wins and frustration when they don’t.
