Summer Programs - Not Just for Kids!

Summer time at the library is jam-packed with activities and special programming, but it's not just for kids! We have some special programs lined up for adults including computer classes, guest speakers, creative writing and book clubs, and more!

Kick off the summer with us as we celebrate the beginning of Adult Summer Reading program with a party on Wed, June 6th at 1:00 pm! Bring your A-game as teams go head to head in friendly competition playing group board games, enjoy refreshments, and try your luck at winning door prizes.

Adult Summer Reading Program Winner 2011

Congratulations to Christy from Katy, winner of the 2nd Grand Prize for the 2011 Adult Summer Reading Program.  She won a $150 Amazon gift card.  Christy registered for summer reading to get her little boy started reading early.  This was her first year to sign up and POOF, she's a winner!  Congratulations, Christy.

 

SUMMER READING CLUB -- BRANCH WINNER

Barbara Bush Branch WinnerMonika Anderson -- Winner of the $50 Branch Gift Card

Monika has been a teacher at Epps Island Elementary in the Klein ISD for the past five years. For three of those years, she taught third-graders and brought her class to visit the library during the Klein ISD Art Day field trips. This year she is concentrating on completing her doctorate in reading at Sam Houston State University, so winning this card for her summer reading seems very appropriate.

Monika is married and has two children, Magnus (age 6) and Addison (age 7). She and her husband both joined the adult SRP this year for the first time, at the urging of Monika's mom who has participated in the past.

Third Grand Prize WinnerBobbie Lupa -- Winner of a $100 Gift Card

This was the first year that Bobbie entered the Summer Reading Program, having learned about it through the afternoon book club at the Barbara Bush Library. What Bobbie liked best about the SRP was the chance to see what others were reading, and to read the reviews of other library customers. Just as in book club, she always came away with great ideas for new things to read. She is encouraged to see that people, especially young people, are still enjoying the classics. Bobbie has been participating in reading clubs and contests since she was a little girl, always working hard to be the "top" reader, so winning this gift card brought back good memories for her. She looks forward to spending her $100 on books to encourage the youngest reader in her family, her 8-month old granddaughter Lily Rose.

An Invitation: To Read outside [your personal] box!

Summer is almost upon us and so are our summer reading programs. We, in the Adult department will be challenging our readers to s-t-r-e-t-c-h yourselves with your summer reading this year. Whatever your favorite kinds of books, be they Inspirational, Thrillers, Science Fiction, or Mysteries, we're encouraging you to try something else! We'll be putting up bookmarks with some ideas for you--look for them in the Fiction department and upstairs in Non-Fiction.

And remember that we're happy to request anything you don't see on the shelf, either from another branch or via interlibrary loan from across the country.

HARRIET COLE WINS BRANCH PRIZE FOR SUMMER READING

Michele KubasHarriet Cole has won the Barbara Bush Branch prize in the 2010 Harris County Public Library Adult Summer Reading Program. Harriet was awarded an Amazon $50 Gift Card! She was chosen by a random computer generated drawing of all adult customers at the Barbara Bush Branch who registered and completed the reading of four books during the summer. Michele Cole Kubas, Ms. Cole’s daughter, (pictured with Annette Main, Asst. Branch Librarian for Adult Services) accepted the gift card for her mother who is currently out of state.

Read to Win! in the Adult Summer Reading Program

Only a fews days left till the end of the HCPL Summer Reading Program. Adults, register now for a chance to win some fabulous prizes. Just 3 steps to become eligible for prizes.

- Register your account through August 7, 2010.
- Read or listen to any four books.
- Log the titles in your account through August 14, 2010.

A random drawing of all system participants who complete the program (see 3 steps above) will be held after the program has ended. There are 3 system wide prizes: $200 GC, $150 GC, and a $100 GC. Each library branch will also have a random drawing of participants who complete the program with a $50 GC prize.
