Building Community One Page at a Time

Each October, for Gulf Coast Reads, libraries throughout southeast Texas encourage residents to read and discuss a selected book as a way of building stronger, more connected communities. This year’s title should be of particular interest to people who call the Texas Gulf Coast their home. The Promise is set on Galveston Island before, during and after the devastating hurricane of 1900 and tells the story of a young woman who is forced by scandal to flee her home in Ohio to a farm on the Island and a marriage of convenience where she struggles to adjust to her new life and family.
