September Programs in the Children's Department

It's a new school year...We have many returning programs and a few new programs for the month of September.  We kick off the month on Saturday, 9/1 with Family Storytime at 11:00 am.  No tickets are required for this program.  We will have another Family Storytime on 9/15.

Maker Monday returns on Monday, 9/10 at 4:30 pm.  This afterschool program is for children 5-12 years old.  It features an activity kit or craft each week.  We'll have pinball on 9/10, Lego Free Play on 9/17, and Magnetic Mosaics on 9/24.

Baby Playtime for infants up to 18 months old will be on Friday, 9/14 at 10:00 am.  No tickets are needed for this program.  Toddlers will enjoy their playdate on Friday, 9/28 at 10:15 am.  Tickets given out at 10:00 am.

Pajama Storytime this Thursday, August 23 @ 6:00 pm

 Looking for a fun way for the children to wear their new pajamas or slippers?  Join us this Thursday, August 23 at 6:00 pm for Pajama Storytime.  This storytime features books, songs, and a cute back-to-school craft.  Children are welcome to wear pajamas and slippers and bring a blanket or stuffed animal friend for the program.   Tickets are required,.  They're free and available at the Kids Information Desk starting at 530 pm.   Thank you to the Friends of Freeman Library for their support of this program.

Fun Children's Programs start back on Monday, August 20 at 10:15 am

The Children's Department returns to regular programs starting on Monday, August 20.  We'll have Preschool Storytime for children 3-5 years old at 10:15 am.  The Preschool Storytime also will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday at 1:30 pm.  For younger children who are walking independently and up to 2 years old, we have Baby Butterlies on Mondays at 11:15 am.   On Wednesday mornings, we have Baby Caterpillars at 10:15  & 11:15 am for newborns and babies walking with assistance.   All these programs require tickets.  They are free and available when we open for the 10:15 programs and 30 minutes before the program for the 11:15 and 1:30 pm programs.

The First Week of July @ The Little Blue Library

It is the week of The 4th of July, and we will be closed in observance of Independence Day, on Wednesday, but we still have a busy week in store for you at The Little Blue Library.   Monday is Story Time in the Gardens @ 10:30 am.  The subject this week will be Trees.  Kids Café’ will be provided Mon, Tue, Thurs, and Friday this week from noon to 1 pm.  Thursday is another wonderful teen program for 7 continents 7 instruments.  This week will be Asia.  They will be making an instrument that has existed for a thousand years.  It is a Dizi.  Friday will be another fun filled family day from 9 am to 3 pm.  Come play Pokémon Go & Geocaching.  You will see the wonderful gardens, maybe learn something new, and have a lot of fun.  Do not

July Events in the Children's Department

We're almost halfway through the Summer Reading Program.  Here's some fun programs we have on tap for children in July.

 Tuesday, July 3 - 2:30 pm only - Fourth of July Crafts.  Make a festive necklace and a colorful rocket to celebrate our nation's birthday.  Recommended for children 3-12 years old.  Tickets given out at 2:00 pm.

Thursday, July 5 - 2:30 pm - Musical Instrument Petting Zoo - Members of the Houston Symphony League/Bay Area will be showing their musical instruments.  We'll have books to check out and fun printables, too.  Recommended for 5 years and older.  Tickets given out at 2:00 pm.

Busy week of programs in the Children's Department May 14-19

   The Children's Department has a busy week of programs coming up on May 14-19.   On Monday, May 14  -  children 5-12 years old can make a magnetic mosaic during Maker Monday at 4:30 pm.;  On Wednesday, May 16 - children 8-12 years old will enjoy learning about the book The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler during the May Book Club program at 4:30 pm.  We'll have a brief discusstion and then see a film adaptation of the book.   On Thursday, May 17 - we'll celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month with crafts and a treat at 4:30 pm.  This program is recommended for all ages.  On Friday, May 18 - babies from infants through 18 months old have a playdate at 10 am.

May Children's Department Programs at Freeman Library

Here are some fun programs we'll have for children in the merry month of May.

Thursday, May 3 at 4:30 pm - El dia de los ninos/El dia de los libros (Chilldren's Book Day).  Celebrate a love of reading by hearing a story read in English and then in Spanish.   This festive program will celebrate the many cultures of the area with crafts and a tasty treat.   This program is recommended for children 3 years and older.  Tickets will be given out at 4:00 pm.

Friday, May 4 - Houston Firefighters visit Freeman with their trucks at 10:15 am.  No tickets are needed for this program held on the Diana Lane side of the library.  Children will receive firefighter hats as supplies last.

Indian Dance Performance and Class in the Children's Area!

 Join us Saturday, May 5th at 10:30 am in the Children's Area as we celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage month with a special Indian Dance Performance followed by a dance class!  This is a FREE program recommended for children ages 6 - 12.  And, later that day at 2:00 pm. pull up a bean bag and join us for Saturday Stories!  What a great way to spend your Saturday, don't you think?  For more information about either program, please call 832-559-4235.

The Art of Story Time!

Anyone can “read” a story...but planning and presenting a story time is truly an art form!  Each week, your Tomball Children’s stafff chooses fun, age appropriate themes and books as well as songs, fingerplays, activities and crafts.  The number one goal for a storyteller is for your child to have a wonderful experience and leave with a big smile on their face!  With that in mind, we are happy to offer story times for all ages and stages:

  1. Baby Bookworms - newborn - walker in training - every Monday at 9:30 am - enjoy stories, songs, fingerplays, mother goose rhymes, fine motor coordination activities, parachute play and interraction with other moms and babies.
  2. Read and Play - Walkers through 18 months - every Monday at 10:30 am - enjoy stories, songs, fingerplays, small game play, fine motor activities, sensory play and interraction with other moms and babies.
  3. Toddler Time - 18 months to 3 years - every Tuesday at 10:30 am and every Wednesday at 9:30 am - enjoy a themed story time with at least 2 books, songs, fingerplays, movement activities, parachute play, an age appropriate craft and play time with other children.
  4. Preschool Story Time - 3 - 5 years - every Wednesday and Thursday at 10:30 am - enjoy a themed story time with at least 3 books, songs, fingerplays, participation activities, parachute play and an age appropriate craft.

Toddler Times and Preschool Story times do require tickets.  They are FREE and handed out 30 minutes prior to the start time at the children's reference desk for 30 particpating children and a parent or caregiver.

March Events in the Children's Department

Here's some special events that will be happening in the Children's Department for March:

Family Storytime - Saturdays 3/3 and 3/17 at 11:00 am - No tickets needed for this fun storytime on a Saturday morning.

A morning preschool storytime starts this Monday, March 5 at 10:15 am.  If you enjoy our Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon storytimes at 1:30 pm, drop by and try out our additional time of 10:15 am on Mondays.  This program is recommended for 3-5 year olds.  Tickets given out at 10:00 am.

Maker Mondays - 3/5, 3/12, 3/19 and 3/26 at 4:30 pm.  This afterschool program for 5-12 year olds features a craft or activity each week.  Tickets given out at 4:00 pm.
